Seven Hermetic Principles in The Kybalion

The Principle of Mentalism

This is the big one, and getting this is key to understanding The Kybalion’s meaning. Before you can employ any of the principles of The Kybalion, the starting point is to take it on faith that the underlying reality of the universe is mental. In other words, we are all literally living in a mental construct similar to the fabric of The Matrix. Here is the premise. If the Universe is Mental in its nature, then learning the art of Mental Transmutation gives you the ability to influence your reality.

Quantum physics teaches that our entire universe is a product of both our conscious and our subconscious mind, our thoughts and emotions. Mental manifestation is a real and powerful way to change our life.

The Universal Law of Mentalism. (Immutable) – EVERYTHING WAS ONCE A THOUGHT.

The first of the seven Universal Laws is the Law of Mentalism that tells us that “The All is Mind—The Universe is Mental”.

This means that mind or consciousness is the underlying substance of the entire Universe and that this consciousness is the Mind of The Absolute – Universal Mind.

Being an Immutable Law, nothing can or ever will change it and it holds true on all planes—the Physical, the Mental, and the Spiritual Planes.

‘All is Mind’, however, does not mean that everything belongs to the Mental Plane. Rather, the Mental Plane is that plane of Mind associated with what we consider to be mental activities such as thinking, imagination and your overall mental state.

All energy and matter, both visible and invisible and at all degrees of existence, is created by and is subject to The Absolute of which your God Self is a Divine Spark.

Your mind is one and the same with Universal Mind in Its entirety. And your reality is but a manifestation of your mind, a projection of your consciousness. And since all is mind, this means that you do not have a mind, you are mind. This is the essence of Mind Power.

The All is Mind – The Universe is Mental. The “ALL” can be considered as a universal, infinite, living mind. Everything we see and experience in our physical world has its origin in the invisible, mental realm.

There is a single Universal Consciousness – the Universal Mind – from which all things manifest. All energy and matter at all levels is created by and is subordinate to the Omnipresent Universal Mind.

Your mind is part of the Universal Mind. Your reality is a manifestation of your mind. 

The Principle of Correspondence

Almost everyone is familiar with the belief that the life we create is a reflection of the image we hold in our mind. Within and without relate. Consequently, what may be invisible can be deduced by observing the visible. Or to put it another way, you can get a sense of what will happen in your life (the invisible, because it hasn’t happened yet) by paying attention to your thoughts (the visible). Your dominating thoughts, the ones you give energy to, are the ones that will manifest in your life. Your thoughts mirror your reality. This is the essential takeaway of the law of correspondence.

Law #2: The Law of Correspondence (Immutable)

The second of the seven Universal Laws is the Law of Correspondence, also known as the Law of Analogy.

This Law tells us “As Above So Below, As Below So Above”, “As Within So Without, As Without So Within”.

This means that there is “harmony, agreement and correspondence” between the Physical, Mental and Spiritual Planes.

Put simply, there is no separation since everything, including you, is Mind. The only difference is the rate of vibration, as the third of the Universal Laws tells us. The same pattern is expressed on all planes of existence from the smallest electron to the largest star, from the visible Physical Plane to the invisible Spiritual Plane.

Using the Law of Correspondence

The practical use of the Law of Correspondence is that it allows you to logically understand the nature of those things beyond your understanding by studying the nature of those things that you do understand and then finding the analogy.

For instance, by understanding the creative aspect of Universal Mind, you can precisely understand how your mind creates your reality.

You can understand the state of your outer physical world by looking at your inner mental world. Similarly, your inner mental world can be revealed to you by looking at your outer physical world.

The New Thought author, James Allen, perfectly captured this Law when he said, “Circumstances do not make a man, they reveal him.”

This means that your outer world circumstances are revealing your inner world and so to change your circumstances, you must change what you think, which includes how you feel, what you assume, what you believe and so on.

Moreover, the Ancient Greek Temple of Apollo at Delphi was referring to this great Law of Correspondence in the inscription “Know thyself and thou shalt know all the mysteries of the gods and the Universe”.

The Principle of Vibration

The Law of Attraction or Vibration

To understand the Law of Attraction, let us first understand its underlying counterpart, the Law of Vibration.

The Law of Vibration decrees that everything moves, or vibrates, nothing rests. Everything ever created, from the smallest atomic particle to the largest skyscraper, is in a constant state of energetic motion.

Now, the thoughts you think and internalize (get emotionally involved with) are in control of the VIBRATION you are in. As you become conscious of this vibration, you refer to it as how you are “FEELING.”

There is a connection between your FEELINGS, what you ATTRACT to yourself, and the RESULTS you get in your life.

The vibration, or feeling, you are in leads to the actions you take, and your actions create the results you experience in life.

When you understand the Law of Attraction, instead of allowing the outside world to dictate what you think and how you feel inside, you start to live from the inside out by choosing and focusing on thoughts that align with what you want.

This causes changes in your vibrational field to attract or create the results you seek in life.

A common example of vibration and frequency is the tuning fork.

When you hit it with a hammer and get it vibrating, it will cause other tuning forks in the vicinity to begin to vibrate at the same time, at the same frequency.

In hermetic philosophy, the same thing happens with the vibrations that are caused by ideas.

Our thoughts determine what we attract into our lives. By resonating positive emotions like joy, love, gratitude and happiness, you will naturally attract corresponding vibrations from others.

Most of us grasp this on an intuitive level: we’ve all had days where we’re upset or frustrated, and everyone we meet just seems to make it worse.

Hermetic philosophy says that this isn’t just a coincidence. Instead, when we resonate (for instance) joy, we will actually attract people into our lives who bring us more joy.

The Universal Law of Vibration (Immutable)  – NOTHING IN THE UNIVERSE RESTS, EVERYTHING RESONATES AND HAS A VIBRATION (the law of attraction has its foundation in this law)

Everything that starts from a thought and forms into an object is in a continuing state of vibration.

For a fact, nothing rests. Small atoms of energy vibrate at various degrees of frequencies.  This law helps us to understand the different dimensions.

The higher the rate of vibration the less visible it is. Our bodies are vibrating at such a slow rate that it appears solid.

Thoughts have a frequency and vibrate very quickly so are not easily seen unless you are gifted in clairvoyance. Your awareness of these thoughts is what is known as feelings. Your thoughts manipulate the patterns of vibration you produce. 

Therefore, what you are attracting is inline with the objects you are vibrating.

With your thoughts you are able to attract positive and negative vibrations. So it is best to be careful of the things that you are thinking as they are able to materialize.

Positive attracts positive and negative attracts negative. Energies can only harmonize with energies that vibrate at a similar frequency

The Law of Vibration that tells us “Nothing Rests—Everything Moves—Everything Vibrates”, “The Whole Universe is But a Vibration”.

This is confirmed by modern-day science that states everything, including you, is pure energy vibrating at different rates of vibrations.

The only difference between all manifestations of consciousness or mind, be it matter, thoughts, emotions, things or circumstance, is their corresponding rate of vibration.

The higher the rate of vibration, the less dense or more subtle (less physical) that thing is. The lower the rate of vibration, the more dense or less subtle (more physical) that thing is.

On the Physical Plane, everything you experience with your five physical senses is conveyed to your brain through vibrations. Everything in the 3D world is a vibration only that you experience things as being solid because of the way your brain interprets those vibrations.

On the Mental Plane, when you think you emit thought-waves and each thought-wave has its signature frequency albeit invisible to your physical senses. The overall frequency of your mental nature is determined by what you persistently think, feel, imagine, believe and so on, which in turn determines the corresponding nature of your projected 3D experience.

Since you can consciously choose your thoughts, you can intentionally increase the rate of vibration of your mental frequency by thinking more positive thoughts of a higher frequency.

The Law of Vibration Underpins the Law of Attraction

The axiom that “like energy attracts like energy”, upon which the Law of Attraction is based, is founded in the Law of Vibration.

You can learn to control your mental vibrations at will by consciously choosing what you focus on, what you imagine, what you assume and how you emotionally react to outer world circumstances.

Similarly, you can also change your core beliefs and reporgram your subconscious mind. This is the foundation of true thought power.

The Law of Vibration and Directive Power

Importantly, we also know that in accordance with the Law of Vibration, higher rates of vibration have directive power over lower rates of vibration. This means the higher your degree of consciousness towards your Higher Self, the greater your directive power over the denser degrees of consciousness below it, including your Mental Plane and the 3D Physical Plane.

This then explains why the ‘higher’ you go in degree of consciousness on the inside, the greater your ability to effortlessly manifest your desires on the outside because the former has directive power over the latter.

The Principle of Polarity

The Kybalion states that what we think of as opposites are really just differences in degree. Hot and cold aren’t categorically different; they’re just changes in degree. The more heat a room has, the less likely we are to say that it’s cold; and vice versa. Up and down also aren’t categorically different; the more up you are, the less down you are.

The same is true of wealth and poverty. Wealth and poverty aren’t different categories of being.

Instead, it can be helpful to think of a sliding scale with poverty at the low end and wealth at the top.

That’s really empowering, because it means that when you’re trying to move from poverty to wealth, you don’t have to escape one category of being and jump ship to a totally different one.

Instead, you can just focus on moving up the sliding scale towards wealth, and appreciate even small gains along the way. Even extreme opposites are categorically the same.

The Universal Law of Polarity. (Mutable) – EVERYTHING IS DUAL, EVERYTHING HAS AN OPPOSITE

With the law of relativity comes the law of polarity where all things have an opposite. Not only have they an opposite but they have an equal opposite, for example: yin-yang, black or white, night or day, good or bad, success or failure.

One cannot exist without the other. There wouldn’t be black if there is no white. There wouldn’t be bad if there were no good. Opposite poles always go together with no exceptions.

Therefore if something bad happened in your life then there would also have to be something good that comes from it. 

It is always best to view what is good in a person in the same way that we view what is good in our life. This attracts good vibration and therefore good results come out of it.

Compliment people with the good and let them feed on the positive thoughts from it. Remember that anything that happens in your life just is. You make it good or bad by looking at it positively or negatively.

Law #4: The Law of Polarity (Mutable)

The Law of Polarity that tells us that “Everything is Dual, Everything has Poles”, “Everything has its Pair of Opposites”, “Opposites are Identical in Nature, but Different in Degree”. It is the first of the Mutable or transcendable Universal Laws and means there are two sides to everything.

Things that appear to be opposites or contradictory are just two extremes of the same thing.

For instance, heat and cold appear to be opposites but in truth, they are varying degrees of the same thing called temperature. The same applies to all opposites. The opposite pairs of love and hate, peace and war, positive and negative, good and evil, yes and no, light and darkness, energy and matter are all but varying degrees of the same thing.

You can transmute your emotions along the same line of any pair of opposites; from hate to love, from fear to courage and so on by rising above your emotions and by consciously choosing to focus on higher emotions.

This serves to raise your Mental Plane’s overall vibration and hence also your corresponding 3D experience. In Hermetic Teachings, this is called the Art of Polarization and Mental Transmutation.

Rising Above the Law of Polarity

This Principle of Duality may appear to be very real in your life but it operates only in the Physical and Mental Planes, not in the Spiritual Plane where All is One. As it says in the Bhagavad-Gita, “God is Above the Opposites”.

By always placing the All-Powerful, All-Knowing Great Spirit or Absolute of which your True Self is a Divine Spark, behind everything you say and do, and by endeavouring to focus on the positive even when things appear not to be going your way, while also avoiding the extremes, then in time, you will come to master the Law of Polarity.

Moreover, by refusing to label anything as ‘good’ or ‘bad’ be it a desire, person, thought, thing or circumstance, you prevent yourself from becoming attached to either side.

And when you are not attached to either side of the opposites, you can see them for what they are—different expressions of the same thing; and so you can start to transcend this Law of Polarity.

The Principle of Rhythm

Some days you feel like nothing can stop you. But the next day you might not even want to get out of bed. What happened?

The principle of rhythm. The pendulum swing. Life isn’t constant; it’s always changing and moving, up and down.

Understanding this is very powerful, because it gives you a key insight into the future: no matter where you are, whether it’s good or bad, things will change.

You can even take it one step further: if you’re the same person you’ve always been, then you can expect change roughly in line with what’s happened in your past. If you’ve become someone new or different, then you can look at yourself and make some rough predictions about how the principle of rhythm will change your life based on who you are now.

This principle applies to everyone, and like all the other hermetic principles, once you know what to look for you can start to see it everywhere.

In all of life there is the yin and yang, the ebb and flow. A key The Kybalion principle is that it’s possible to use the laws together in order to come into control of your life. You only need to know how.

The Universal Law of Rhythm. (Mutable) – EVERYTHING FLOWS

The Principle of Rhythm embodies the idea that in everything there is manifested a measured motion, a to and fro, a flow and inflow, a swing backward and forward, a pendulum-like movement. 

Everything that is in existence is dancing with a rhythm. When something moves back, something must move forward. Just like the sun comes after the rain or night flows into the day and a smile comes after a tear.

Life is full of rhythm and we all have to learn how to dance with it. You can be the best dancer when you are able to understand the rhythm of life. “Go with the flow.”

When you’re in a bad situation remember the pendulum is pushing you back in the backward flow, and it will swing in the positive direction soon. Keep this in sight and your mind focused on the upswing. The degree in which you want to drag yourself into the negative is up to you.

Law #5: The Law of Rhythm (Mutable)

The Law of Rhythm that tells us that “Everything Flows, Out and In”, “All Things Rise and Fall”, “The Pendulum Swing Manifests in Everything”, “The Measure of the Swing to the Right is the Measure of the Swing to the Left”, “Rhythm compensates.”

It is the second of the mutable or transcendable Laws of the Universe and means that all things, be they visible or invisible, swing between the opposites courtesy of the Law of Rhythm’s pendulum.

This Universal Law is evidenced in the waves of the ocean, in the rise and fall of empires, in business cycles, in the swing of your thoughts from being positive to negative and in your personal successes and failures.

In accordance with this Law, when anything reaches a point of culmination then the backward swing begins almost unnoticeably until such time that any forward movement has been almost totally reversed, then the forward movement begins again and the process is repeated.

Working With the Law of Rhythm

To work with rather than against the swing of the pendulum, you must become aware of the subtle start of the backward movement in any of your endeavours whether it be to improve your health, finances, relationships or any goal you may set in motion.

When you feel the Law start to draw you back do not become fearful or discouraged. Instead, remember that you are one with the All-Powerful Absolute for which nothing is impossible, keep your thoughts focused on your desired outcome and remain positive no matter how far back this transitory Law pulls you.

Even if your efforts meet with failure, find comfort that by virtue of this very same Law, the upward motion must start again.

Rising Above the Law of Rhythm

You can rise above the Law of Rhythm in your inner world and hence also in your outer world by avoiding the extremes so that the pendulum has nothing to correct. This does not mean to strive for mediocrity and nor does it mean to not care for anything or anyone.

Rather, it means to seek balance because balance is in fact what this Law seeks.

When for instance you experience mental extremes on both sides of the spectrum, be they in the way of fear, panic, over-excitement or a sense of obsession or attachment, seek to calm your mind so that your thoughts, emotions, words and actions that follow are not extreme.

In this way, the swing to the one side will be so measured, that the swing to the other side will be unnoticeable.

Extremes are relative and what is extreme for one person may be measured for another and vice versa. You can only gauge if what you’re thinking, feeling or doing is extreme and the criterion, according to Pythagoras, is whether it’s hurting or harming you—your present or future self.

The Principle of Cause and Effect

According to the Three Initiates, a very large part of getting what you want in life is knowing that nothing ever happens by accident.

Everything is influenced by these laws laid out in The Kybalion. By understanding them and learning how to apply them, you can cause the effects you desire, via an act of mental creation that can cause your desired manifestations.

Instead of feeling like a pawn in the game of life, the key meaning of The Kybalion is that you can become a player and influence the outcome of the contest.

The Universal Law of Cause and Effect. (KARMA) (Mutable) – EVERY CAUSE HAS ITS EFFECT; EVERY EFFECT, ITS CAUSE. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS CHANCE, EVERYTHING HAPPENS ACCORDING TO THE LAW OF CAUSE AND EFFECT

The events that occur in our life are a matter of cause and effect. Whatever you throw up (cause) must come down (effect), in the same manner that whatever you give out will come back to you.

Think of this law as the boomerang, whatever you throw out will come back.

So watch your actions, good deeds are rewarded with good deeds, good words are rewarded the same way. So if you want to get something in return start planting a good deed and you will harvest plenty in the future. At present, you don’t have to think of what you can get but focus on what you are able to give.

Law #6: The Law of Cause and Effect (Mutable)

The Law of Cause and Effect that tells us that “Every Cause has its Effect”, “Every Effect has its Cause.”

In accordance with this Law, every effect you see in your outside or physical world has a very specific cause which has its origin in your inner or mental world.

This is the essence of thought power.

Your thoughts, your beliefs about yourself, others and life, and your overall mental state set in motion specific causes that come to materialize over time as corresponding effects in your outer world.

Mastering Cause and Effect

To master your destiny, you must master your thinking because everything in your 3D reality is but a mental creation—a projection of consciousness.

There is nothing like chance or luck, at least not in the way we define them. They are simply terms used by humanity in ignorance of this Law of Cause and Effect.

• Your invisible inner world is the cause and the visible 3D outer world is the effect.

• Do not allow your outer world to determine the frequency of your inner world.

Persist in the thoughts, feelings, assumptions and imaginings of the life you wish to live and the outer world will in time follow suit.

In line with the conscious creation process, your outer world (effect) must come to match your inner world (cause) by Law.

Your Imaginings are Instantly Created

The Law of Cause and Effect applies to all three planes of existence—the Spiritual, the Mental and the Physical Planes.

Having said this, on the Spiritual Plane cause and effect are instantaneous such that they appear inseparable. On the other Planes, our experience of time and space creates a time lag between the cause and the eventual effect.

When you focus on your chosen desires with intention using creative visualization or other manifesting techniques, what you want to create in the Physical Plane is instantaneously created in the Spiritual Plane.

With perseverance, practice and continued concentrated imagination, your desired outcome will also come to manifest in the 3D Physical Plane because the higher vibrations of the Spiritual Plane means it has directive power over the lower ones.

In other words, whatever is created in the Spiritual Plane is in time projected in the Physical, because the former directs the latter.

The Principle of Gender

This universal principle is another facet of duality. Every one of us has both masculine energy as well as feminine energy; there is a masculine principle and a feminine principle to all things. It applies to everything, on all planes of existence, regardless of how large or small. At the subatomic level protons have a positive charge and electrons a negative charge. The charge on the proton and electron are exactly the same size, but opposite. The negative polarity represents the feminine and the positive charge corresponds to the masculine.

What does the law of gender mean for your life?

“Masculine” energy (which is not exclusive to men) is goal-oriented and action-focused. It’s about moving towards your goal every day.

“Feminine” energy (which is, again, not exclusive to women; every one of us has both) is about taking a step back, reflecting and re-evaluating. Feminine energy pushes you to look at the big picture and course-correct so you can take more effective action, instead of just keeping your head down and continuing on the same course.

The key to success is to make these two energies work together, by knowing when to use each one. When is the right time to charge towards your goal, and when is the best time to step back and course-correct?

The Universal Law of Gender – GENDER IS IN EVERYTHING – MALE AND FEMALE OF PROCREATION

This law states that there is female and male in every living creation. Ying and yang is the perfect balance of the feminine and masculine energies.

The male and female energies are very different to one another.

The male is focused, logical, statistical, orderly and mathematical. Where the female energy generates new thoughts, concepts and ideas, is intuitive, imaginative and creative, gentle and reflective.

If we allowed ourselves to be ruled by masculine energies then we would act without restraint, order or reason, resulting in chaos. On the other hand if we were ruled by feminine energy than we would constantly reflect and fail to do anything resulting in stagnation. When these two energies work together it creates balance and harmony and breeds success.

Law #7: The Law of Gender (Mutable)

The last of the seven Universal Laws is the Law of Gender. It tells us “Gender is in Everything”, “Everything has its Masculine and Feminine Principles”. This mutable Universal Law is evident throughout creation in the opposite sexes or genders found not only in human beings but also in plants, electrons and magnetic poles to name but a few.

Everything has both masculine and feminine aspects—the masculine is directive and the feminine is creative and the two must work together with harmony.

In the Mental Plane, the directive masculine aspects are your conscious mind, your will and your logic.

And the corresponding feminine creative aspects are your subconscious mind, your desires and your emotions respectively.

Both genders are equally powerful and important and the pairs must work together. Specifically, your conscious and subconscious mind, your will and desires, and your logic and emotions must all work as pairs towards the same outcome.

Masculine and Feminine Qualities Within

Everyone has within themselves both masculine and feminine qualities. Among the outward expressions of feminine qualities are love, patience, intuition and gentleness and of masculine qualities are energy, self-reliance, logic and intellect.

Know that within every woman lie all the latent qualities of a man and within every man those of a woman. When you know this and allow your qualities to shine and work in unison with each other, you will know what it means to be complete.

The Law of Attraction as Part of the Equation

You will notice that the Law of Attraction is not mentioned as one of the seven Universal Laws. This is not to diminish its importance. The Law of Attraction is one of the basic Laws which runs through all of the Universal Laws. One could say it holds everything together.
