It’s a daunting question. But your answer may say a lot about your well-being. Studies link a sense of purpose to better physical and mental health. But your purpose isn’t just about you.

Successful athletes experience victory long before they receive a medal or trophy for their accomplishments.

In 1984, Mary Lou Retton vaulted into U.S. Olympic history and became the first gymnast from the United States to win the all-around gold medal.  A reporter asked, “How does it feel to receive the first perfect 10 for the U.S. Olympic team?”

“Like it’s always felt,” she answered.

“But no one has ever done it before!” he exclaimed.

She laughed, “I’ve done it thousands of times in my mind.”

Jack Nicklaus, one of the greatest professional golfers of all time, believed his concentration on a clearly-defined goal led to his success. Usain Bolt, famed sprinter from Jamaica, attributes his success to a faithful commitment to a definite chief aim – to be the fastest runner in the world. 

Professional athletes consistently tell their minds exactly what they want their bodies to achieve.  They commit themselves to a practice of articulating their goal, visualizing their success, and dedicating themselves to the work of transforming their desire into reality.

2. BENEFITS OF HAVING A DEFINITE MAJOR LIFE PURPOSE

Research shows that finding your purpose is linked to living longer. Researchers surveyed nearly 7,000 older adults on the relationship between mortality and finding your purpose.

Participants who did not have a strong sense of meaning in their lives were more than twice as likely to die prematurely as those who had figured out their purpose in life. Having a sense of purpose also reduced the incidence of cardiovascular events like heart attack and stroke.

These results were universal, even when controlled for income, race, gender and education level. Researchers concluded that finding your purpose helps you live longer. It’s also essential for happiness and fulfillment.

Achieving goals may not help you find the purpose of life, but knowing your purpose can help you achieve your goals. When you truly know your purpose, you’ll experience a sense of clarity like never before as you’re able to connect what you want to achieve to your ultimate fulfillment.

You’ll feel passionate, driven and laser-focused. You’ll stop battling with the past and the future and start living in the present – and that’s the greatest gift you can give yourself.

3. The Major Definite Major Purpose Defined

According to researchers, a true purpose is one that is both personally meaningful and also makes a positive impact on the lives of other people—your family, friends, neighbors, city, country, or even the whole world.

Your major definite purpose can be defined as the one goal that is most important to you at the moment. It is usually the one goal that will help you to achieve more of your other goals than anything else you can accomplish. It must have the following characteristics:

1. It must be something that you personally really want. Your desire for this goal must be so intense that the very idea of achieving your major purpose excites you and makes you happy.

2. It must be clear and specific. You must be able to define it in words. You must be able to write it down with such clarify that a child could read it and know exactly what it is that you want and be able to determine whether or not you have achieved it.

3. It must be measurable and quantifiable. Rather than “I want to make a lot of money,” it must be more like “I will earn $100,000 per year by (a specific date).”

4. It must be both believable and achievable. Your major definite purpose cannot be so big or so ridiculous that it is completely unattainable.

5. Your major definite purpose should have a reasonable probability of success, perhaps fifty-fifty when you begin. If you have never achieved a major goal before, set a goal that has an 80 percent or 90 percent probability of success. Make it easy on yourself, at least at the beginning.

Later on, you can set huge goals with very small probabilities of success and you will still be motivated to take the steps necessary to achieve them. But in the beginning, set goals that are believable and achievable and that have a high probability of success so that you can be assured of winning right from the start.

6. Your major definite purpose must be in harmony with your other goals. You cannot want to be financially successful in your career on the one hand and play golf most of the time on the other. Your major definite purpose must be in harmony with your minor goals and congruent with your values.

4. What’s Your Major Definite Life Purpose?

When men first come into contact with crime, they abhor it. If they remain in contact with crime for a time, they become accustomed to it, and endure it. If they remain in contact with it long enough, they finally embrace it, and become influenced by it. Any stimulus of thought which is repeatedly sent to the subconscious mind is finally accepted and acted upon by it.

Writing down your major definite purpose and reading it aloud twice daily, will influence your subconscious mind in a similar way and will create a burning desire that you require to achieve your goals.

A lot of people set goals but few see their goals materialize. This is because they live their lives passively taking anything that comes their way.

Creating a definite chief aim is a way to trick your subconscious into having the right mental process to achieve your goals. Your major definite purpose is a very specific statement which has the power to influence your subconscious mind. Your burning desire will in turn will force you to take daily action that moves you towards attaining your goal.

It’s very common for people to wonder about their life purpose but not their major definite major life purpose.

These queries largely stem from a person’s unhappiness with their current life situations.

There are a lot of commonly known life purposes that may not be a major definite major purpose, like:

  • Providing for your family Living a successful life. 
  • Making positive connections with others and enjoying those around you.
  • Traveling the world. Fighting the declining condition of our life.
  • Etc

If you’re anything like us, you have likely spent years or even decades searching for your life purpose and the reason why you’re here on earth.

You may have this deep “knowing” that you’re destined to be on a different path, or that’s there’s “more” out there for you. But what exactly is it?

You might get super-excited about a new avenue for like a day, a week or a month before eventually going, “Nah, that’s not it”. You might even be embarrassed that you’ve tried so many things and still you’re haven’t found “your life purpose”.

Worse again, you might abandon ship altogether with the thought that there’s likely something wrong with you for wanting “more”.

Trust us, we’ve all been there! And until you’ve found your life purpose, there is “more”. it’s what drives you and moves you forward, even if you haven’t yet identified what exactly “that” is yet.

When you know your life purpose, you’re content with your life. When you’re living your life on purpose, you feel a sense of flow, as if you’re headed in the right direction. Everything feels right, you feel motivated and intrinsically happy with little to no effort.

When you tap into your life purpose, you feel a sense of peace and harmony. When you feel like you’re going against the flow or that you’re meeting roadblocks at every turn, you have quite possibly veered off your life purpose path.

Some people are really fortunate to know their true life purpose from early in life, while others discover it much later on.

Sometimes a life purpose emerges in response to a life experience which may have been completely joyful. Sometimes your purpose becomes completely apparent as the result of a traumatic event, or a series of them!

There are things, though, that don’t nurture or feed our life purpose. We need to let go of what no longer serves us, whether they are thoughts, actions, emotions or old patterns of behavior.

If you’re constantly feeling drained around someone, consider letting that person go. Maybe this person is sucking the joy out of your life. If a habit is causing you more pain than happiness, it might be time to look at it.

If you find yourself going around and around in a negative loop in your head, consider upgrading your mindset. Your subconscious mind is giving you messages all the time.

  • What did I love to do as a child?
  • What are my core values?
  • Who or what in my life no longer serves me?
  • Have I had any wake-up calls that changed the way I view life?

  • Are there any coincidences or synchronicities that could serve as clues?
  • What are my wildest dreams and desires?
  • If I had six months to live, what would I do?

Finding your life purpose could be viewed as a journey back to yourself, who you are at your core. It can be a scavenger hunt or a treasure hunt, you decide what feels best for you!

It’s all about being self-aware, curious and asking questions that bring you closer to the place you were always meant to be, to your home within you.

You are not ahead or behind on your journey, you are exactly where you are supposed to be at this moment in time.

There are many benefits of knowing your purpose – but how can you figure it out? It is a combination of the science of achievement and the art of fulfillment that creates the road to happiness and a life of meaning. To succeed in finding your purpose, you must master this balance.

1. SEARCH INWARD

The questions “What is my purpose in life?” and “How can I be happy?” are actually the same – and they have the same answer. You can never truly understand how to find your purpose by listening to others’ opinions and seeking outside approval.

Everything you need is within yourself. The only thing holding you back is your own limiting beliefs. With each limiting belief you identify and replace with an empowering belief, you develop greater self-awareness. And when you’re in control of your emotions, you’re in control of your life.

2. PUT PURPOSE BEFORE GOALS

If you focus only on achieving short-term goals, you will never find your true passion or learn how to find your purpose. The goals you work toward must always be based on finding your purpose. If they’re not, you’ll only feel a fleeting sense of accomplishment and will soon be seeking something more. You won’t be able to see that life is happening for you instead of to you.

When you set a goal, ask yourself: How will this help me feel more fulfilled? How does this relate back to my purpose? Use a journal or a system like Tony’s Rapid Planning Method to ensure you always keep your purpose top of mind.

3. FOCUS ON WHAT YOU HAVE

Developing an abundance mindset is like opening your eyes to life: You will see beauty and goodness all around you. With this new perspective, your purpose in life becomes much clearer. You question less and less how to find your purpose because you feel like you have more of the answers and that you are on the path to achieving meaningful goals.

When we focus on what we have, fear disappears and abundance appears. You’ll stop living in fear that you’re wasting your life and begin to attract positivity and joy. Finding your purpose becomes an exciting journey, rather than a stressful goal.

4. TAKE OWNERSHIP OF YOUR LIFE

True fulfillment comes from designing your own life. This is how you unlock the extraordinary. To find your purpose, you must decide what’s truly right, and know it in your heart and soul. You must not let yourself be driven by fear or anxiety. A decision made from fear is always the wrong decision. It will not help you understand “What is my purpose?” but instead confuse the issue even more.

To truly take ownership, you must stop playing the victim. Realize that every circumstance in your life is a result of your own decisions, not anyone else’s. When you take responsibility for finding your purpose instead of blaming others, fulfillment follows.

5. THINK ABOUT WHAT BRINGS YOU JOY

Look back on your life and identify the times when you felt the most joy. Was it when you were connecting with your partner? Making a successful presentation at work? Creating art or helping others? When you discover what brings you joy, you usually discover where your passions lie.

Your abilities are connected to that sense of joy, so examine them, too: Can you pick up a pencil and sketch a lifelike portrait? Do your friends tell you that you’re a great listener? When you look closely at the activities or skills that come naturally and also bring you joy, you’ll likely stumble upon passions that you can turn into a profitable career.

6. DEVELOP YOUR OWN LIFE VISION STATEMENT

Before you can ask yourself “What is my purpose?” you first have to know what an ideal world looks like and how you fit into it. Creating a life vision statement involves identifying what life would look like if everyone were living up to their fullest potential. This will help you develop a roadmap to guide you in the proper direction.

7. DISCOVER YOUR TRUE NEEDS

When asking themselves “What is my purpose in life?”, some people don’t even know where to start. If you fall into this category, it helps to examine the Six Human Needs. Your top need – certainty, significance, variety, love/connection, growth or contribution – affects every decision you make.

Lack of awareness about your own needs can leave you with a false sense of purpose – one that is actually based on others’ expectations. This is why you can reach the top of the career ladder, find the “perfect” partner or be in the best shape of your life, but still not feel happy. Fulfillment begins with your innermost needs.

8. WRITE OUT YOUR STORY

Writing helps us organize our thoughts – and discover new ones we may not even know we had. It’s proven to help us reach goals, improve memory and decrease stress, which are all essential when you’re learning how to find your purpose.

Putting your life in writing can reveal hidden meanings you may not see otherwise. Start with this exercise: What strengths do you have that helped you get through tough times? How have you helped others? And how have other people helped you? Write it all down and you’ll begin to see patterns that will help you find your purpose.

9. TAKE TIME FOR YOURSELF

“What is my purpose?” is a deep question that takes time and reflection to answer. When you spend all your time running from one commitment to another, you never have time to just sit quietly and reconnect with yourself. Make sure you schedule enough personal time to reduce the noise and demands of the outer world and focus on what you want.

When you feel depleted searching for meaning in life, take a deep breath and center yourself. Take time for self-care, whether that’s a spa day or reading a book in the park. It’s by looking within that you’re able to identify your values – the beliefs you hold most dear as a guiding force in life. You won’t understand how to find your purpose without first taking a step back and relaxing.

10. EMBRACE ACCEPTANCE

Part of finding your purpose is accepting your own limitations. Instead of getting frustrated with yourself, give yourself a break. Get to know yourself bit by bit, taking the role of observer. As you practice self-compassion while building self-awareness, you’re able to find the meaning you’re seeking.

Self-compassion means being patient with yourself. Feeling lost in life can be a very disorienting feeling. You may feel frustrated, but be gentle with yourself. Everyone who has ever asked themselves “What is my purpose?” began from a place of uncertainty. Their hesitancy was what prompted them to dig deep and find greater meaning.

11. FIND YOUR COMMUNITY

Finding your purpose in life is often about discovering where you fit in. When we meet our “people,” we feel like we are home: relaxed and at ease, able to truly be ourselves. Your community can often help you discover how to find your purpose, or to live your purpose once you’ve found it.

To find your community, follow your passions. Join a volunteer group. Take a class to develop a skill you enjoy. Seek out support online. Find others who enjoy the same music, books or plays. The saying “You are who your friends are” is true – and when you find the right community, it’s a good thing.

12. BE FLEXIBLE

One of the hardest parts of learning how to find your purpose is letting go of old identities and interests that no longer serve us. Yet it’s something that must be done. Your purpose in life is also likely to grow and change as you grow and change. You must be willing to be flexible and to listen to your innermost wants and needs.

Finding your purpose is a lifelong journey. Being flexible lets you grow in integrity while being true to yourself. When you develop your core values and stop seeking external affirmation, you’ll find that the question of “What is my purpose in life?” is much easier to answer.

7. Why it’s Important

So here you are. You have a purpose “to become a successful and rich person with a huge positive impact on the world”. You’ve written it down in your journal as one of your goals, and off you go.

Fast forward 10 years:

Let’s imagine you’re now successful and rich and have a huge influence on the world. You have spent your early years building a company. Your company makes a nice profit. People all around the world look up to you because you seem to be successful, rich, and have a positive influence on the world.

You now check all the boxes of what you thought your purpose in life was 10 years ago. But are you happy? No. Because in the process of fulfilling your life purpose, you’ve had to sacrifice other things, like:

  • Dating and finding a loving partner.
  • Spending time with your family.
  • Going on holidays with your friends.
  • Getting kids.
  • Traveling the world.
  • Running a marathon.
  • Etc.

Even though your purpose in life wasn’t necessarily a bad purpose, there’s one problem with it: it wasn’t YOUR purpose in life.

Maybe your purpose in life was to simply build a loving family and to be happy?

That’s why it’s extremely important to discover your own purpose in life! You may discover what you did for 10 years was not really your true life purpose.

8. Influences to Your Major Definite Purpose

Are you influenced by your family, your friends, your significant other, your spouse or your past experiences? Do you have a negative attitude and believe you can’t succeed because of failures in the past.  

Do you take failing as a final stoppage to anything new in your future instead of seeing failure as an opportunity to grow, get out of your comfort zone, and try something different.   The world is in your hands.

Do you let your finances control any new opportunity or are you open to anything even if you had to travel or relocate to another country?

Is it your passion, your feelings of adventure or is it your parents screaming at you that you have the abilities to be a doctor, lawyer or something you are truly not interested in, but you feel an obligation because they are your “parents”?

To find a vocation that sparks a major definite life purpose in your life requires you to look at your talents and your gifts.  You must refer to your abilities in academic subjects like science, math, and language. It is a natural ability. 

To find a vocation that sparks a passion in your life requires you to look at your abilities in dance, music, design, sports, writing, the fine arts. etc.  It requires you consider your imagination and creative powers.  It requires you discovered your quantitative and qualitative abilities.  

12. Formula to Create a Major Definite Life Purpose

There is one quality which one must possess to win in life. That is definiteness of purpose. The knowledge of what one wants, and a burning desire to possess it. You must also have the determination to persevere, no matter how long it may take you to manifest your life purpose.  

To create your major definite purpose, follow the steps below:

Step 1 – Determine Your Specific Major Definite Purpose

Determine exactly what you desire being as specific as possible. You can never have a burning desire for something vague. Wanting to be rich is vague, but wanting to make a million dollars is being specific. Wanting to lose weight is vague, wanting a 30 inch waist line is being specific. It must be one specific thing that you are willing to give your life for.

Step 2 – Establish The End Date

Establish a date by which you want to acquire or achieve this thing that you desire. It is important to be realistic. The time period should be long enough for your goal or desire to be achievable but short enough for you to find it worth pursuing.

Step 3 – Determine The Price

Determine what you are willing to give in return for this thing that you desire. You have to pay a price for the object of your desire and you have to pay it in full before you get it. You never get something for nothing and the definite chief aim prepares you to pay the price as and when it is necessary.

If you want to be a millionaire, you need to create the necessary value in return for the money. If you want to get in shape you have to put in the necessary work and follow a proper diet plan. Regardless of what your desire, there is a price you have to pay for it.

Step 4 – Make A Definite Plan

Make a definite plan that will help you realize this desire and put this plan into action immediately, whether you are ready or not. Your plan need be specific and concrete. You need to start somewhere. Note that you need a place to start and direction to work towards. You don’t need an elaborate plan.  Your plan will evolve in your subconscious and you will think of various different plan parts at a later date as you develop a burning desire.

Step 5 – Write A Concise Statement

Write the results of the above four steps in a concise statement. It must include what you desire, what you are going to give in return for your definite major purpose, along with the time limit and the plan with which you intend to acquire your definite major purpose. Remember to write down the date when you wrote it down along with your name or signature. This concise statement is your major definite purpose or definite chief aim.

Step 6 – Reading Your Major Definite Purpose

Read this concise statement of your major definite major purpose twice daily. Once after waking up and once before going to sleep. When you read this statement, see and believe that the object of your definite major purpose is waiting to be transferred to you when you deliver the service/work you have committed to render in return for it in step 3.

CREATING A BUSINESS PURPOSE & STATEMENT

1. Defining Your Definite Major Business Purpose & Envisioning Your Desired Outcome

Before you start doing the things, the tasks, required to start a business, we suggest you follow the above-referenced 6 steps. They come from a very famous book by Napoleon Hill, called Think and Grow Rich.

It’s one of those books that most successful people I know have read. In his book, Hill presents his concept of the Definite Major Purpose.

There are a lot of people who start businesses in a niche because they think it will make them a lot of money. They know nothing about the niche, and have no interest in learning anything about it. This can work, but it is highly discourage, especially for your first, or primary business.

Once you decide what business you are going to start, envision the outcome you want according to the Rules of Think and Grow Rich.  Picture the lifestyle it will bring you.  Imagine what you will do with the money you will earn.  Be as specific as possible. 

2. Fundamental Major Definite Business Purpose

A business purpose describes the reason, or purpose, that a company was initially founded. It describes what makes a business unique, as well as what the business plans to do.

A business purpose is not a mission or value statement and is much shorter than both. Whereas a mission statement is used to identify the purpose or values of the company, a business purpose is a legal phrase.

This statement is often included with the Articles of Organization. This statement informs the state or investors of the reason why you are forming the business.

A business purpose statement can help you define the goals and intentions of the business, as well as describe the services offered to a customer. It can also give brands a competitive edge by having clear goals. Some business owners also use the business purpose statement as a starting point for writing their mission statement.

Companies may also turn to their business purpose to make decisions or create policies. Additionally, some businesses may use the business purpose statement to ensure any changes align with their initial purpose.

Let’s start with the most basic – The Fundamental Purpose of Business.

History is littered with attempts to define the purpose of business. In 1776, Adam Smith stated the purpose of business as the mechanism to generate profit and increase shareholder wealth (known today as the “shareholder view”).

Smith’s definition of business purpose identifies profitability as the defining characteristic. This definition however is problematic. Relying on profitability alone ignores the ease of manipulation and ambiguity of profit as an appropriate measure.

Profitability is simply a measure of the surplus (or the deficit) remaining after costs are deducted from revenues. Trusting profitability alone obscures the role of investments made for the future and alternative capital structures.

Should the appropriate measure of profitability include or exclude re-investments or costs associated with capital structure, of which there are alternatives, any of which can affect profitability?

Rejecting, as an oversimplification, profitability alone, others have restated the definition of business as maximizing shareholder value or wealth. Relying on the premise that the principle purpose of business is to maximize value (over time) overcomes the distortions profitability alone experiences.

Nevertheless, the reliance on maximizing value neglects the underlying mechanism that businesses use to create value – creating customer satisfaction.

Peter Drucker said, “There is only one valid definition of business purpose: to create a customer.”

Drucker’s definition is useful. However, it suffers from two shortcomings. First, businesses create customer satisfaction not customers. Second, this definition is silent on a business’s dependency on capital.

We suggest a better description of business purpose is: Use revenues and capital to produce customer satisfaction and capital provider rewards.

Extraordinary businesses use revenues and capital to produce customer satisfaction and capital provider rewards.

Failing to satisfy this fundamental business purpose is unsustainable. There are examples of businesses that operate in violation of this principle but not for very long.  

There is a temptation to include the interests of other stakeholders (employees, suppliers, communities, or others) in the definition of business purpose.

The interest of other stakeholders is noticeably excluded from our description. Other stakeholders are not unimportant however business sustainability can be achieved absent their special consideration.

Nevertheless, there are compelling reasons that the interest of other stakeholders should be explicitly identified. Doing so should be addressed as part of the business’s intentions that I’ll discuss separately.  

Every business is different. Businesses differ in scale and performance. They differ in what they do and how they do it.

Despite countless differences there is an underlying principle that each and every business must conform: The Fundamental Business Purpose (Business Purpose).

Failing to satisfy this fundamental purpose “will” (not “may”) result in business failure. This design applies to every business regardless of whether it is a sole practitioner or a multi-national enterprise; whether a technology company or a local pizza parlor; whether for profit or not for profit. 

The Fundamental Business Purpose requires a business to use revenues and capital to produce customer satisfaction and reward capital providers.

This idea is easily dismissed as obvious and trivial.  Yielding to this temptation is an engraved invitation to disaster.
