[2]: Discovering How To Find Yourself to Shape Your Destiny
Have you ever met someone and thought, “That person knows exactly who they are”? They’re confident, decisive and passionate. They have an unstoppable belief in themselves and their vision for the world. They have not only connected with their authentic selves, they have fully embraced them.
You can also experience this sense of fulfillment – but first you must learn how to find yourself.
Are you thinking, “Finding myself seems like a lot of work”? It is. Creating a life that is fulfilling, purposeful and passionate is no accident. It takes work. And it starts with unlocking the secrets to how to find your true self. Then you can design a life that is in line with your personal destiny.
Step 1. REFLECT ON YOUR STORY
All of our actions and decisions reflect the story we tell ourselves – the beliefs we’ve formed beginning in childhood, when we wanted to earn the love of our caretakers. The events and experiences of our lives since then, as well as our knowledge about the world, influence our story into adulthood.
If you’re interested in finding yourself, reflection is the first step. Use a journal to record how you became the person you are today. Begin a meditation practice to quiet your mind and dig deeper into who you really are. Releasing your emotions has a cathartic effect that will start you on your journey toward understanding how to find yourself.
Step 2. DETERMINE YOUR VALUES
Don’t make the mistake of believing your past is your story. As Tony tells us, “Everybody’s got a past. The past does not equal the future unless you live there.” While it’s helpful to reflect on your past in order to discover how you’ve formed the beliefs you have today, learning how to find yourself is about growth and forward movement.
No matter what happened in your past, it’s up to you to determine your values. Our values are our guiding light in the world, yet so many of us don’t know our own values. We have an idea in our head of who we “should” be – but this idea of ourselves comes from limiting beliefs that are formed as a result of others’ opinions, not our own. You can change your values. You can be whatever you desire, as long as you believe in yourself.
Step 3. SILENCE YOUR NEGATIVE SELF-TALK
As you reflect on your story and begin to determine your values, you’ll naturally tune in to your self-talk. Perhaps you’ve noticed it before – but have you ever questioned it? Is your self-talk positive or negative, empowering or disempowering? Does it encourage you to get out of your comfort zone or keep you living in fear?
If you’re saying to yourself, “How can I possibly focus on finding myself?” then it’s time to silence your inner critic. Examine your thoughts as if you are your own best friend – you’d probably never let your friends talk to themselves that way. Once you recognize damaging thoughts, replace them with empowering ones that push you toward your goals instead of holding you back.
Step 4. DISCOVER YOUR STRENGTHS
When you go through life living up to others’ expectations and allowing negative self-talk to bring you down, it’s impossible to know how to find your true self. When you begin the journey to finding yourself, discovering your strengths can be the most exciting part.
To start the process, think back on the last time you felt like you were in your element. Were you writing, singing, playing a sport, connecting with someone on a deep level, fixing things around the house or volunteering? This feeling of happiness and purpose is a sign of your strengths. Once you’ve identified your strengths, you can leverage them – along with your values – to create an extraordinary life.
Step 5. RECOGNIZE WHAT DOESN’T SERVE YOU
Still thinking, “Finding myself seems impossible”? If you’re still struggling to find yourself, you need to reveal who you are as an individual. To do that, you need to free yourself from patterns and relationships that don’t serve you.
The human brain craves patterns because they conserve energy. When we fall into patterns, the brain doesn’t have to make decisions about certain actions and behaviors. Patterns can be extremely damaging, but once you recognize them, you can build better habits that serve you.
Even more difficult than changing your habits is recognizing the relationships that don’t serve you. But you must let them go. Instead, surround yourself with people who allow you to be your best self, with no inhibitions. People who encourage you to aim higher, achieve more and reach your peak state. Anything less, and you will always wonder how to find yourself – and never find out. Tony Robbins Motivaition – How to Find Yourself Again

[4]: Find Where You Are Going By Changing Your Paradigms
What Is A Paradigm Shift?
If you’ve heard of the idea of a paradigm shift, you may have also seen this funny little diagram:

We use this map to explain how the conscious and subconscious minds interact in order to help you achieve the results you want.
You can break this idea into several stages.
At the center of the diagram is your mind and body. As you go about your life, you are constantly thinking. The thoughts you know you are thinking are formed by your conscious mind, and include everything from what you want to eat for lunch to whether or not you have enough money to make it through the month.
These conscious thoughts are influenced by two things: your subconscious mind, and the world around you. Of these, the subconscious mind has the more important impact, because the subconscious mind holds your automatic beliefs and interpretations about the events that happen. When you feel limited because you’re staring at a bill you can’t afford, you feel limited because your negative beliefs are telling you how to interpret the situation.
This is important, because your subconscious mind is a key factor determining your point of attraction. Your mindset determines what happens to you, for better or worse. Wherever you currently are – whatever your current situation is – your mindset has created it, by setting the level at which you attract your experiences.
This point of attraction then creates the world you experience. Your mind dictates how you act and respond to that world, and the cycle repeats.
Most people remain stuck in the same cycles for years, or even their entire lifetime.
The good news is that there is an easy way to shift your paradigm and draw your goals to you. Learn more about how to use The Law of Vibration.
The Law of Vibration is one of the 12 Universal Laws governing how our world works. It tells us that everything is energy, from the chair you’re sitting in to every thought that passes through your mind. It also governs your experiences because you can only experience circumstances for which you are a vibrational match. This means that The Law of Vibration works together with The Law of Attraction to create your everyday life.
If you can understand these laws, you can use them to create the world as you wish it to be, and to experience any desire you may hold. In this post, I’ll outline how to use the Law of Vibration for manifestation, in order to help you create consciously the life you’ve always desired.
How To Shift Your Paradigm in 3 Steps
Shifting your paradigm does not have to be difficult. In fact, you can do it in just three steps.
The first step is to create a goal. We recommend having goals that are so big you have absolutely no idea how they are going to come. The fact that you cannot predict when or how the goal will come is a positive characteristic, not a limiting one. So think big!
Once you have your goal, the second step is to determine how you must think, feel, and act in order to have that goal. You must determine who you must become in order to live the life that includes your dream.
The key to understanding this step is to realize that your goal already exists. It simply exists at a level you cannot yet see. When you shift your mindset to become the person that already has the goal, you are changing your paradigm, and moving closer towards living the life you truly want. You can do this through a number of different techniques, including: visualization, positive affirmations, and autosuggestion.
To help you make this shift, you can try guided abundance meditation, where we helps you to visualize your aims and enter into the energy of your goals.
Lastly, you have to act consistently from the point of view that your goal is already accomplished. This is the most difficult step for many people. It is easy to do a meditation or visualization to clarify your aims and feel positive energy about them, it is harder to transform that energy into a positive belief, and act from a state of certainty, even as the circumstances around you don’t appear to match up.
If you do these three steps, however, you will be able to change your vibration quickly, moving from where you are to where you want to be, and that shift – the shift in your paradigm – will then create new experiences for you, which are more closely aligned with your desires.
When you’re doing something that’s out of the ordinary, your mental programing, your paradigm, will try and stop you. Day 1 – Paradigms | The Millionaire Frequency

Your paradigms may be masked in complacency, fear, worry, anxiety, insecurities, self-doubt, mental hurry, and self-loathing – the result is keeping you stuck…locked in a box and starved of your dreams and ambitions. Understanding the Power of Paradigms

[5]: Are You Going in the Right Direction?
As a USF college student, mid-to-late August always brought a large wave of mixed feelings: coming to terms with the imminent end of summer; reminiscing on nights spent fireside with friends; getting excited to see familiar faces bustling around campus; yet still dreading the onslaught of readings, assignments, and projects that comes with the start of a new semester.
Why the sense of dread?
Going through the motions at school can leave you feeling a bit like a hamster running furiously in circles, but not actually going anywhere. It can be difficult to see the connection between the present and future when you’re just trying to get by week to week.
At least, that’s what my first two years of college felt like, and, honestly, I thought it was always going to feel that way – until I came to a pivotal realization. It wasn’t the workload, the professors, or a lack of effort on my part: it was the misalignment between what I was studying and what truly interests me.
Listen to Your Instincts
I spent two years studying USF’s core requirements, only to find out I didn’t actually wanted something different.
What could I pursue that still involved numbers, deep thinking, solution design, and helping others?
After weeks of searching trying to determine my destiny, it turns out there was a career that piqued my interest.
I spent the next couple of years earning a Bachelor’s degree and my involvement with my education had fundamentally changed. Instead of dreading class, I loved learning more. This was “right up my alley”. Finally, I felt invigorated and full of intention throughout my studies. Most importantly, I felt confident that I’d chosen a path that would surely lead me to a career I would love.
How We Can Help?
Looking back, USF would have helped me immensely during my early college days if I understood all the assistance they offered to students like me. In fact, when I interviewed to attend USF, they showed me my career matches based on my assessment results.
Finding this out not only validated the struggle that was my first two years at USF, but it made me wish I’d known that information much sooner. Two years of college is a significant time commitment and financial investment. Had I known I was a strong match for my chosen destiny during my freshman year…I might have had earned my Ph.D. in Psychology rather than in Law!
USF Taught Me How to Make the Most of the Semesters to Shape My Destiny
So, I challenge YOU – students headed back to USF this fall (or those headed there for the first time). Listen to yourself, explore your interests, find out what makes you light up inside. Let USF help you during this exciting period of self-discovery and career-planning, by showing you the career paths that align with your unique characteristics and preferences for certain types of activities. We want you to love your future career just as much as we love ours.

[6]: Put Your Life in Context
There are many times in life where one does not know what comes next or where to go in life. The realization that you are lost and don’t know where to go, or that you don’t like where you are going often comes as an epiphany.
Most people describe this as being in a rut. It’s like you have everything you want and still so much is missing. You could have everything in the world but something about your life still doesn’t feel right.
[2]: Ask Questions
[1]: Where am I going and how do I get there?
Where am I going? Are you happy with where your life is right now?
In this blog I ask a series of questions to help you think deeply about the relationship between where you are going in your life; and where you want to be going. I aim to form a link between the two to help you understand how to focus with intent and create the life of your dreams. It may surprise you just how simple it can be!
[3]: Questions to Consider
- Are you happy with where your life is right now?
- Can you see change on the horizon or is your view blocked by doubt?
- What intentions do you have for making your life completely fulfilling in every way?
- Did you make conscious decisions or unconscious decisions that brought you to where you are at present?
- How many external influences dictate your actions and your journey along the way?
- Have you told yourself you’re a failure? That you don’t deserve luck. That you’re not worth it. Only good things happen for other people. I’ll never make it. Or something similar?
- Are you at ‘A’ but wanting to get to ‘Z’ and not sure on how, or afraid of taking a leap of faith? Or did you think, what-if I don’t make it..what then?
- Scared to voice, even to yourself what you truly, truly desire? Or have your thoughts and emotions become so entangled you don’t know, or have never known?
[4]: Mind Chatter Influences
If you are occupied and distracted by the constant chatter of your mind – the continual whirl of ‘what if’ conversations; or the dreaming up of scenarios that never eventuate, what kind of world is the monkey chatter creating for you? Who is in control?
All this mindless internal chatter might indicate your heart is not being heard and the door is closed. When this happens our soul light dimmers. A darkness descends and our cells go quiet; our body grows tired, feeling weary and listless.
To gain back control and truly get on a pathway to the life of your dreams, it’s important to create a quiet time to reflect on where you are, or where you are going versus where you want to go. When we turn our focus to wanting the best for our self, and open our minds to how we want our life to be, a light flickers on. This light becomes brighter and brighter – illuminating our path so we get to where we want to be.
[5]: Guidance to Shape Your Destiny
- So maybe it is time to sit; to ponder; to feel; and not think.
- Find a quiet spot where you won’t be distracted, and tune in and listen to your deeper feelings.
- Allow yourself to actually feel them, and not be afraid of the guidance or answers that spring from your heart.
- Allow your deepest wants to surface regardless of the fears that pop up whilst you contemplate.
Whatever arises, write it down. Write a journal about your true feelings. What you want. What you desire. Imagine them as real. Play in them. Turn up the color; increase the volume; and immerse yourself in the joy that flows from your heart.
This will have you feeling uplifted, hopeful and believing in your future. As sure as the air we breathe, your heart will sing when you allow it to express what has always been there but you may have forgotten. What you may have hidden away out of sight and out of mind.
When we turn our focus to wanting the best for our self, and open our minds to how we want our life to be, a light flickers on which becomes brighter and brighter illuminating our path so we get to where we want to be.
[6]: Signs You Need to Change Your Destiny
It is important to identify when you are unhappy with your life and want to change where you are going. Some of the most common signs of needing a change in life are as follows:
- You feel unhappy with your life and often reminiscence about the choices you made.
- You feel as if you are forced to go against your morals and intuition at work or home.
- The situation that you find yourself in currently is causing you a lot of stress.
- There is a fear or dread of the future and the consequences of your life decisions that have been causing you anxiety.
- You feel like you had to give up on your passions and interests just to make it in this world.
- The future that you are currently envisioning seems nothing like what practically lies ahead.
- You find yourself surrounded by unhappy people who often think you’re too idealistic.
- You often look forward to having a ‘good day’ even when nothing is particularly wrong with the days right now.
If you feel like most of these signs apply to you, then it’s time to re-evaluate where you are headed in life and how you want to change that.
[7]: There 3 Key Phases of Life You Must Always Focus On when Shaping Your Destiny
Before learning how to choose the right direction for yourself, first try to understand the 3 key phases of life:
[1]: The Learning Phase
The Learning phase typically stretches from the age of five into the early twenties and its over-riding characteristic is freedom.
Your thinking is unfettered, you are chock-full of dreams and aspirations and (happily) someone else is footing the bills. It’s not a cliché to say that schooldays, for many of us, really were the happiest days of our lives.
Contrast it with adult life – no one expects very much of you, and other than passing a few exams along the way and you can just swing along, having a great old time …
[2]: The Earning Phase
The next phase is the Earning years; the period from leaving formal education (at 20-something) to retirement (at 50-something or 60-something). Welcome to the grown-up world, welcome to the tax net.
The overriding concern in this Earning phase is the security (I spell that word as follows: $ecurity because, for many people, this phase tends to be all about generating sufficient income to pay the monthly bills.)
Reality bites. This can require sublimating the dreams of youth as a life of routine takes over. Few in the Earning years question the choices they have made because, typically, this questioning process can be quite disconcerting – oddly, I find this is particularly true of people who are less than happy with their working lives.
Routine generation of wealth becomes paramount and you get swept along with the current. This is fine if you made sound choices in your late teens and early twenties with regard to your career. But if you didn’t … for routine, read ‘RUT’.
Which brings us to Morley’s Yearning phase – from ceasing your full-time occupation until … well, ceasing.
[3]: The Yearning Phase
What is yearning? Unfortunately, yearning is not the same as simple hankering, wanting or desire. The dictionary definition of yearning is: “A feeling of intense longing for something lost, absent or unattainable.”
A bit gloomy. So for many people, the Yearning years are about looking back over a life not quite fulfilled and saying ‘I wish, I wish. If only … if only …’
With the wisdom of years comes regret for the road not taken, the too-conservative choices made.
Studies conducted in the geriatric population and on terminally ill people consistently demonstrate that regrets in human beings arise as a result of decisions not taken. The wise old owls that I have talked to over the years all speak with one voice on this.
It is better to look back and think, ‘I wish I hadn’t …’ rather than wistfully saying, ‘I wish I had …’
Think about where you are…
As you think about your career, your life, and your plans for the future, you are, at the very least, going to have to contemplate some uncomfortable choices about yourself, your personal style and your level of happiness.
I make no apologies for this – that’s just life. But I contend that it is better to take the time and spend the effort now to improve the choices that you make for later, rather than to have those choices made for you at a time that may not suit you.
Some people get these choices unerringly right and they do so early in their lives. Others come to a realization of the right path much later in life. Ray Kroc changed his whole approach to his McDonald’s business in his early 50s. Colonel Sanders didn’t start his KFC franchising efforts until he was in his early 60s. And the list can go on.
It’s never too early and it’s never too late – but you have to think about it.
[8]: Choose Your Right Path When Shaping Your Destiny
Do you know at what phase of life are you now? Once you understand where you are now, the next step is to find the direction you want to move to.
You have the motivation and direction to take your life where you need it to be, you just need to get up and do it. The best time for change is now, and if you procrastinate any further you might miss out on a great opportunity.
To live a meaningful life, it is important to pick a direction that brings both peace and success. Here are some things to take into consideration when choosing a new direction in life:
1. Chose What Your Inner Child Would Want
It is very important to acknowledge the needs and opinions of our ‘inner child’. That’s because we often have real happiness at this age and develop passions that last us a lifetime. To calibrate your direction in life, think of what the younger you would feel about your current situation and what would they want to do.
2. Think About The Things You Want To Change
Make a list of the things in your current life that you are dissatisfied with and want to change. Then think of the alternative options you have to give yourself a life where you find happiness and fulfillment by avoiding these things. This will help you understand what must be done to feel good in life.
3. Find Inspiration to Follow
Everyone has an idea of what they want in life and finding inspiration isn’t hard in this day and age. Just think about those you admire and see as role models and try to follow in their footsteps. As they have already reached a place you associate to be a goal, you will find it easier to navigate your way through life to reach that destination as well.
4. Be Clear on What You Don’t Want To Be
To find out where you want to be headed in life, try finding out where you don’t want to end up. This would help identify situations and placed you would try and avoid at all costs. It keeps you on the right track because if you minimize the wrong paths, then choosing the right one becomes much easier.
5. Learn to Enjoy Where You Are
There is no such thing as a perfect life. What you need to learn, is to work hard and to find things to be happy and grateful for.
Live in the moment, appreciate the things you have. Only this way you will see clearly the meaning of your life.
6. Commit to Getting or Staying Healthy
Nothing is more important than your mental, spiritual and physical health.
Getting your life on the right path isn’t something you can achieve in a day. But, with hard work and dedication, you will get there!
7. Help Others
By helping others you will increase your sense of purpose and improve self-esteem.
There are many ways to do this. Volunteer in your community, mentor young people, or just help neighbors.
You will be surprised by the feeling you will have after.
Start Making the Change Today
After reading all this, you are surely ready to change the direction of your life. Start by making a change today instead of just thinking about it. Every difficult journey starts with a single step, and this is the sign to take yours. Once you make one change, the rest follow suit and soon your life will be exactly how you want it to be.

[7]: Take Self Assessments When Shaping Your Destiny
This session of USF101 will include a “coffee Q&A” meet-up, optional for students, so that a smaller group of students will connect with your Alumni Ambassador in an off-campus location (within reasonable distance).
The best way to prepare yourself for success at USF is to take assessments. Don’t worry, you don’t have to study for these types of tests – because they are all about you!
Self-assessments are a great tool for USF students to uncover valuable insights about themselves. They also help students recognize their strengths as an individual, a student, and a future professional. Not to mention, its fun to learn about yourself!
Discover what motivates you, what is most important to you, and what you are good at so you can plan a future that will bring you joy and purpose.
Self-discovery is the first step to making confident, informed decisions about your USF education and career path. Of course, truly knowing yourself will come with time and experience.
But for now, utilizing self-assessments is a great way to get a head start. Check out these resources for free online assessments that will help you better understand yourself! Discover how you can apply your unique qualities to your education and work experiences.

[8]: Use the Andrew Carnegie Success Assessment when Shaping Your Destiny
The method by which DESIRE for riches can be transmuted into its financial equivalent, consists of six definite, practical steps, viz:
- First. Fix in your mind the exact amount of money you desire. It is not sufficient merely to say “I want plenty of money. “Be definite as to the amount. (There is a psychological reason for definiteness which will be described in a subsequent chapter).
- Second. Determine exactly what you intend to give in return for the money you desire. (There is no such reality as “something for nothing.)
- Third. Establish a definite date when you intend to possess the money you desire.
- Fourth. Create a definite plan for carrying out your desire, and begin at once, whether you are ready or not, to put this plan into action.
- Fifth. Write out a clear, concise statement of the amount of money you intend to acquire, name the time limit for its acquisition, state what you intend to give in return for the money, and describe clearly the plan through which you intend to accumulate it.
- Sixth. Read your written statement aloud, twice daily, once just before retiring at night, and once after arising in the morning.
AS YOU READ-SEE AND FEEL AND BELIEVE YOURSELF ALREADY IN POSSESSION OF THE MONEY. It is important that you follow the instructions described in these six steps. It is especially important that you observe, and follow the instructions in the sixth paragraph. You may complain that it is impossible for you to “see yourself in possession of money” before you actually have it. Think And Grow Rich By Napoleon Hill (Unabridged Audiobook- With Chapter By Chapter Commentary)
Here is where a BURNING DESIRE will come to your aid. If you truly DESIRE money so keenly that your desire is an obsession, you will have no difficulty in convincing yourself that you will acquire it.
The object is to want money, and to become so determined to have it that you CONVINCE yourself you will have it.
To the uninitiated, who has not been schooled in the working principles of the human mind, these instructions may appear impractical. It may be helpful, to all who fail to recognize the soundness of the six steps, to know that the information they convey, was received from Andrew Carnegie, who began as an ordinary laborer in the steel mills, but managed, despite his humble beginning, to make these principles yield him a fortune of considerably more than one hundred million dollars. Download Napoleon Hill’s “Think and Grow Rich”
Think and Grow Rich! is one of the most widely read and important motivational books ever written. Written by the American author Napoleon Hill, it is one of the first examples of the now popular ‘personal success’ genre of popular books.
However, this famous book could not have been written without the support and insistence of one person, Andrew Carnegie.
Think and Grow Rich! was inspired by Andrew Carnegie, a Scottish-American industrialist, businessman, philanthropist, and the founder of the Carnegie Steel Company which later became U.S. Carnegie He came from a poor background, and had massive ambition, and strongly believed in effort and continual self-improvement.
A ‘self-made man’, he started his working life as a telegraph messenger boy, while continually devouring books to build his understandings of life. With a charming character and an ability to easily make friends, his hard working attitude got noticed and through his life he was able to enjoy the help and advice of many mentors.
A keen writer, Andrew Carnegie himself published wrote many articles on the subject of wealth and improvement. Here is a quote from a memo e made to himself which goes some way to explaining his philosophy:
“Man does not live by bread alone. I have known millionaires starving for lack of the nutriment which alone can sustain all that is human in man, and I know workmen, and many so-called poor men, who revel in luxuries beyond the power of those millionaires to reach.
It is the mind that makes the body rich. There is no class so pitiably wretched as that which possesses money and nothing else. Money can only be the useful drudge of things immeasurably higher than itself. Exalted beyond this, as it sometimes is, it remains Caliban still and still plays the beast. My aspirations take a higher flight. Mine be it to have contributed to the enlightenment and the joys of the mind, to the things of the spirit, to all that tends to bring into the lives of the toilers of Pittsburgh sweetness and light. I hold this the noblest possible use of wealth.”
Carnegie was of the belief that achieving financial success could be reduced to a straightforward and simple formula. A formula that then could be ‘modelled’ by others, to benefit not only themselves, but if they were following it correctly, the community. In 1908, he commissioned (at no pay) Napoleon Hill, who was then a journalist, to interview more than 500 high and wealthy achievers to find out the commonalties of their success – what was it that they had in common which caused them to be successful?
Twenty years later, with Hill now more than a freelance employee but a co-author, the work was published – ‘The Laws of Success”. This was the work on which “Think and Grow Rich!” was based, and fine tunes “The Laws of Success’s” 15 ‘success laws’, into 13 tighter and clearer principles on how to achieve personal success.
Both author’s principles are firmly embedded in these works, with an emphasis on determination, faith and desire being cornerstones that help to take one forward.
Hill in his introduction to the book refers to the “Carnegie Secret”, a conception which he reports is the foundation of all success and appears to be the premise of the book. Hill promises to indirectly describe this “secret” in every chapter, but never state it plainly, believing the use of the secret is only available to those who possess a “readiness” for it, a disposition Hill describes as essential to the concept itself.
Think and Grow Rich! has never been out of print since it was first published, and is believed to have sold more than 30 million copies! Think & Grow Rich (13 Steps To Success) Condensed by Earl Nightingale

[9]: “Your Thoughts are Things”
Focused on the premise that “thoughts are things,” the book extols you to let positive and successful thoughts permeate your mind, so that they can “influence both your conscious and subconscious.”
By managing and controlling your dominating thoughts, you’re better able to steer your way towards greater success – and riches – in all aspects of your life. To accumulate any form of success in great abundance, you need to “magnetize” your mind with an intense desire, create a definite plan, and believe that you’re able to do so.
13 Principles come into Play When Shaping Your Destiny
#1 Desire
Your starting point for any achievement is desire. To turn any desire into “gold,” Hill suggests six practical steps:
- Fix in your mind the exact amount of money that you desire.
- Determine exactly what you intend to give in return for the money you desire.
- Establish a definite date when you intend to possess the money you desire.
- Create a definite plan for carrying out your desire, and begin at once, whether you are ready or not, to put this plan into action.
- Write out a clear, concise statement of the amount of money you intend to acquire, name the time limit for its acquisition, state what you intend to give in return for the money, and describe clearly the plan through which you intend to accumulate it.
- Read your written statement aloud, twice daily, once just before retiring at night, and once after arising in the morning. As you read – see and feel and believe yourself already in possession of the money.
#2 Faith
Faith is the “eternal elixir” which gives life, power and action to the impulse of thought! – Napoleon Hill
Considered the most powerful of major positive emotions together with love and sex, faith can be strengthened through the principle of autosuggestion. It is a state of mind which can be built through positive thoughts mixed with strong emotions.
To clear your mind of fear, doubt and unbelief, Hill proposed the following faith affirmations to build your self confidence (abridged):
- I know I have the ability to achieve the object of my definite purpose in life;
- I demand of myself persistent, continuous action toward its attainment;
- I realize the dominating thoughts of my mind will eventually reproduce themselves in outward, physical action, and gradually transform into physical reality; therefore, I will concentrate my thoughts for 30 minutes daily on thinking of the person I intend to become and creating a clear mental picture;
- I know through the principle of autosuggestion that any desire which I persistently hold in my mind will eventually seek expression through some physical means; I will devote 10 minutes daily to demanding of myself the development of self-confidence;
- I have clearly written down a description of my definite chief aim in life; and I will never stop trying, until I shall have developed sufficient self-confidence for its attainment;
- I will engage in no transaction which does not benefit all whom it affects. I will succeed by attracting to myself the forces I wish to use, and the cooperation of other people. I will induce others to serve me, because of my willingness to serve others;
- I will eliminate hatred, envy, jealously, selfishness, and cynicism, by developing love for all humanity;
- I will cause others to believe in me, because I will believe in them, and in myself;
- I will sign my name to this formula, commit it to memory, and repeat it aloud once a day, with full faith that it will gradually influence my thoughts and actions so that I will become a self-reliant, and successful person.
#3 Autosuggestion
Autosuggestion rides on the power of self-suggestion to reach the subconscious mind and influence it with positive thoughts.
In contemporary parlance, it is known as the power of visualization – a technique used by coaches everywhere to “trick” your subconscious mind into believing in a possibility through repeated instruction.
Here’s how Hill suggests it can be done:
- Find Ideal Environment: Look for a quiet spot where you will not be disturbed
- Close Eyes and Repeat Aloud: State the written statement of how much money you desire, the time limit for its accomplishment, and the description of the service or product you intend to give for the money.
- Repeat: Do this morning and night until you can see in your imagination the money you wish to accumulate.
- Written Copy: Place a written copy of your statement where you can see it night and morning, and read it just before retiring and upon arising until it has been memorized.
#4 Specialized Knowledge
Knowledge is only potential power. It becomes power only when, and if, it is organized into definite plans of action and directed to a definite end – Napoleon Hill
Knowledge in a specialized and valuable field is where power and wealth can be found.
According to Hill, knowledge will not attract money unless it is organized and intelligently directed through practical plans of action to the definite end of accumulation of money.
To deepen your specialized knowledge, you should spend your time and money on both formal and informal education. This can be done by selecting highly specialized courses in the subjects that you wish to focus on.
#5 Imagination
Touted as “the workshop of the mind,” imagination can be classified into two distinct forms:
- Synthetic Imagination: The ability to arrange old concepts, ideas, or plans into new combinations. This harnesses your experience, education and observations, and is mostly used by inventors.
- Creative Imagination: This is where the finite mind of man communications directly with Infinite Intelligence. It is represented through “hunches” or “inspirations” received by the subconscious.
Like any organ or muscle, your imagination can only be more alert with use. To strengthen your ideas generating mind machine, you need to have a plan.
#6 Organized Planning
To turn your abstract ideas concrete, you need a plan for action. This can be done through several steps.
a) Form a Master Mind Group
Ally yourself with a group of like-minded folks for the creation and execution of your plan (or plans). Before doing so, decide what advantages and benefits you may offer the individuals of your group.
Arrange to meet with these members at least twice a week or more often if necessary, and maintain perfect harmony with every team member.
b) Build Your Leadership Capability
Here, Hill describes some of the attributes of leadership which we should all aspire towards:
- Unwavering courage
- Self-control
- A keen sense of justice
- Definiteness of decision (more later)
- Definiteness of plans
- Doing more than being paid for
- Pleasing personality – leaders can’t be slovenly or careless
- Sympathy and understanding
- Mastery of detail
- Willingness to assume full responsibility
- Cooperation of others
In the same breath, we should also avoid the failures of leadership:
- Inability to organize details
- Unwillingness to render humble service
- Expectation of pay for what we “know” instead of what we do with that which we know
- Fear of competition from followers
- Lack of imagination
- Selfishness
- Intemperance (eg losing control through use of alcohol or drugs or other vices)
- Disloyalty
- Emphasis of title
c) Apply for Right Position
In this hefty section, we learn about how we should market our “personal services” as an individual to an organization, and secure the desired job.
Much of it involves sourcing for the right opportunities through multiple channels (job ads, employment agencies, letters of application, personal networks) and creating a perfect “brief” (ie resume and cover letter).
You should also consider the following steps:
- Decide the exact job you want
- Choose company or individual you wish to work for
- Study your prospective employer’s policies, personnel and chances of advancement
- Concentrate on what you can give; forget about “a job”
- Arrange with an experienced writer to write a good resume summary and cover letter for yourself
- Present to the proper person with authority
d) Use the “QQS” Formula
Adopt the following:
- Quality of service: the performance of every detail, in connection with your position, in the most efficient manner possible, with the object of greater efficiency in mind
- Quantity of service: the habit of rendering all the service of which you are capable, at all times, with the purpose of increasing the amount of service rendered as greater skill is developed
- Spirit of service: the habit of agreeable, harmonious conduct which will induce fellow employees and associates to cooperate
e) Conduct a Self Assessment
To avoid the major causes of failure, it is useful to conduct a personal inventory assessment. In the book, we’re given a detailed list of 28 questions which you can ask yourself (you can find a copy here.)
f) Look for Opportunities
Finally, your plan should include taking stock of opportunities to gain wealth. This can be in virtually any industry where market demand outstrips supply.
#7 Decision
Opinions are the cheapest commodities on earth. – Napoleon Hill
Citing procrastination as the greatest enemy of success, the book extols us to make decisions quickly, and to change decisions slowly.
A key factor here is to reach your own decisions, and ignore the opinions of everybody else – the newspapers, gossiping neighbors, family members, friends, and others.
Worthy decisions often require immense courage. However, they’re always worthwhile to act upon.
#8 Persistence
Persistence is the cornerstone of any form of worthwhile endeavor. It allows you to overcome your failures, and to withstand the journey along the long road to success.
There are 4-steps cited in the book:
- Definite Purpose: Backed by a burning desire for fulfillment.
- Definite Plan: Expressed by continuous action.
- Independent Mind: Closed against all negative and discouraging influences, including negative suggestions of relatives, friends and acquaintances.
- Friendly Alliance: Forming a Master Mind with one or more persons who will encourage you to follow through with your plan and purpose.
#9 Power of the Master Mind
Defined as “coordination of knowledge and effort, in a spirit of harmony, between two or more people, for the attainment of a definite purpose,” the forming of a Master Mind allows you to multiply your brain power.
Mr Andrew Carnegie’s Master Mind group, for example, consisted of 50 staff members whom he surrounded himself with for the purpose of manufacturing and marketing steel.
By identifying and enlisting people into your Master Mind group, you can increase your power – here it refers to the organized effort required to enable you as an individual to “transmute desire into its monetary equivalent.”
#10 The Mystery of Sex Transmutation
“When driven by this desire (ie sex), men develop keenness of imagination, courage, will-power, persistence, and creative ability unknown to them at other times.” – Napoleon Hill
This chapter invariably confounds readers. What it seeks to communicate, is this:
Can you convert your energies, emotional intensity and creativity for sexual expression into a positive force that will bring forth riches?
To do so, consider this two-step approach to transmute your sexual energy in a positive way:
- Mental Stimulation: Stimulate your mind so that it functions on a higher-than-average plane, using the same intensity and desire of a sexual encounter.
- Form Perfect Picture: Concentrate on the known factors of your invention, and create in your mind a perfect picture of unknown factors. Hold this picture steady until it has been taken over by the subconscious mind, and then wait for your answer to “flash” by your mind.
“The emotion of sex stands at the head of the list of human emotions, as far as intensity and driving force are concerned… The result of sex transmutation is the increase of thoughts to such a pitch that the creative imagination becomes highly receptive to ideas.” – Napoleon Hill
#11 The Subconscious Mind
To energize and feed your subconscious mind with positive thoughts, you should use autosuggestion to give ‘instructions’ that focuses on the 7 positive emotions:
- The emotion of desire
- The emotion of faith
- The emotion of love
- The emotion of sex
- The emotion of enthusiasm
- The emotion of romance
- The emotion of hope
At the same time, you should avoid any thoughts associated with the 7 negative emotions:
- The emotion of fear
- The emotion of jealously
- The emotion of hatred
- The emotion of revenge
- The emotion of greed
- The emotion of superstition
- The emotion of anger
An interesting point here involves the power of prayer. Here, it is suggested that if you pray for a thing but have fear as you pray that you may not receive it, your prayer will have been in vain!
#12 The Brain
Equating the brain to a “broadcasting and receiving station for thought,” Hill described how the brain, mind and subconscious works.
Let me extract some of its excerpts below:
“The creative imagination is the ‘receiving set’ of the brain, which receives thoughts, released by the brains of others… When stimulated or stepped up to a high rate of vibration, the mind becomes more receptive to thought which reaches it through outside sources.”
“The subconscious mind is the ‘sending station’ of the brain, through which vibrations of thought are broadcast. The creative imagination is the ‘receiving set’ through which the energies of thoughts are picked up.”
“… the principle of autosuggestion, which is the medium by which you may put into operation your ‘broadcasting’ station.”
#13 The Sixth Sense
Some call this your intuition or “hunch.” Others may call it your “genius” or “muse.”
Whatever (or whomever) your source of inspiration may be, Hill suggests that your sixth sense can be nurtured by cultivating in your creative imagination a team of “Invisible Counselors.” In his case, they included men like John Emerson, Thomas Paine, Thomas Edison, Charles Darwin, Abraham Lincoln, Napoleon Bonaparte, Henry Ford, and Andrew Carnegie.
By forming an imaginary cabinet, you can ‘tap’ the ideas, thoughts and knowledge of these distinguished luminaries in your mind!
Dispelling Negative Influences
Towards the end of the book, Hill elaborated at length about the six basic fears and how these could derail your efforts:
- The Fear of Poverty:
- The Fear of Criticism
- The Fear of Ill Health
- The Fear of Loss of Love
- The Fear of Old Age
- The Fear of Death
To overcome these and all other negative thoughts, he suggests the following practical steps:
- Recognize that you have a will-power that can be put into constant use
- Recognize that you are susceptible to all the six basic fears
- Set up habits to counteract those fears
- Recognize that negative influences work through your subconscious mind
- Keep your mind closed against all people who depress or discourage you in any way
- Clean out your medicine chest, throw away all pill bottles, and stop pandering to your hypochondria
- Deliberately seek the company of people who influence you to think and act for yourself
- Do not expect troubles as they have a tendency not to disappoint
Conclusion
Think and Grow Rich is one of the iconic books in self-help literature. Despite being written over 80 years ago, its principles are still valid in the digital and social age.
While some of Napoleon Hill’s philosophies and principles are a bit of a stretch (eg “Sex Transmutation” and “Sixth Sense”), I found that its lessons are still applicable today. Virtually all the “gurus” in the personal development sphere have borrowed his ideas – from Tony Robbins, Brendon Burchard, to Norman Vincent Peale and Bob Proctor.
Do you find the 13 principles of Think and Grow Rich applicable for you? Have you applied them towards your own goals in life?
Anybody can wish for riches, and most people do, but only a few know that a definite plan, plus a burning desire for wealth, are the only dependable means of accumulating wealth. – Napoleon Hill

[10]: How to Find Where You Are Going Over the Next 5 With the Odyssey Plan
USF101 is a 1-unit course designed for first-semester undergraduate students new to USF’s Hilltop campus. This class helps students learn about:
USF’s Jesuit mission, acclimate to the campus community, navigate the university’s academic requirements and resources, explore personal and professional goals, and map their individual pathways to graduation.
Students will learn about these topics through reading, reflecting, discussing, and engaging in activities with classmates and other members of the USF community.
[A]: Making Your Odyssey Plan Work
When making an Odyssey Plan you’re going to create at least three different five-year timelines or alternate realities. Each version should feature professional and personal milestones, as well as bucket list items. The goal is to map out multiple ways in which your life could unfold. Create an Odyssey Plan
The Odyssey plan is a detailed and well thought out brainstorm of how might my life work out going forward 5 or 10 years, given 3 different circumstances. Designing Your Life: Creating Odyssey Plans
When you complete the first step, you end up with 3 completely different time lines for your life over the next 5-10 years. How to Design Your Life (Process For Achieving Goals)
The Odyssey years are a really critical time in a young person’s life. Your odyssey years are somewhere between years 20-35 of your life, the years of wandering that frequently occurs between adolescence and adulthood. The Odyssey plan is a way to ensure you make the most of your Odyssey years, with the goal of attaining a well-lived, joyful life. This is true for most important things in life.
Essentially, you spend your odyssey years deciding who you want to be, your direction in life, the career and lifestyle you want to pursue. In our current society, people graduate from university and are out of education for the first time in their odyssey years. It’s where real adulthood begins. We start our lives, rent apartments, buy homes, build primary relationships, get married, have kids and so on. A lot of change going on, these years are a really formative time in anyone’s life.
The odyssey years are a really critical time in a young person’s life. The odyssey plan is a way to ensure you make the most of your odyssey years, with the goal of attaining a well-lived, joyful life.
The odyssey plan is a fantastic way to rethink your direction in life, but no plan ever really goes to plan. No one could have predicted how 2020 has turned out, so if you had an odyssey plan right now, you’d inevitably have to make changes. That’s important to keep in mind when making this plan. It is always subject to change depending on circumstances, environment and your own feelings.
Professional vs Personal
When doing a life plan like this, don’t forget this is a life plan. Your life is far more than just your career. You have relationships, hobbies, friends, leisure time, a life. So be careful not to focus entirely on the career aspect of things, but to zoom out and look at the whole picture.

[B]: Design 3 Different Possibilities of How Your Next 5 Years Will Be
The Odyssey plan’s idea looks really simple, Design 3 different possibilities of how your following 5 years will be, and that is achieved by doing the following:
Step one: write out what your life will look like 5 years from now if you go down your current path:
This is the simplest step. First, you split a paper into 1-year blocks (template link at the bottom) and start writing down how do you imagine your life will be if you continue with the path you have drawn. Odyssey Plans: What are the Odyssey Years?
Step two: write out what your life will look like 5 years from now if you take a completely different path:
Basically, you put down a scenario where your primary goal is unachievable. But the idea here is that you change your life completely. So let’s say you were planning on graduating and working for a specific firm and become a consultant. Imagine that working for that firm is not possible, or even the career prospects on the field you want to are uncertain. How would life be and what would you do.
Step three: write out what your life will look like 5 years from now if money and societal obligations are not a factor:
The third and last step is to imagine a different plan where money and social status are not deciding or contributing factors. What if your decisions are not limited by the amount of money you have, what if your view of your social status or what others expect from you is not important for you to make your decisions. What would your life be? 5 steps to designing the life you want |
The Aim of the Exercise is Two Main Outcomes
We often believe that we only have one life ahead of us. One track that we can’t drift away from or we imagine that our choices are limited because we are too far from the start line we imagined to ourselves. Understanding that we have the potential to go into different futures can help clarify which way to choose.
It is not simply that we should choose the craziest plan as it may seem to represent what we want. It is more to rethink your main plan and see if there are some important things in the other plans that you may wish to incorporate in the main plan you’ve chosen.
If you made it this far, thank you for taking the time out of your day to considering how to manifest what you want your future life to be.
