Do You Have Blue-Collar Career?

Here is the Wikipedia definition of blue-collar. “A blue-collar worker is a member of the working class who performs manual labor.” My definition is someone who labors to fix something, make something, clean something, build something, or service something (or someone).

In my life, I’ve worked many blue-collar jobs. And, for anyone who’s ever engaged in this line of work, there is a certain satisfaction in a job well done.

But here’s the big question: Can blue-collar work deliver on The Perfect Career List?

The obvious answer is no. Sure, it can deliver on some of the attributes. It might have a great product and a low start-up cost or any number of other individual items on the list, but if you really look at it, blue-collar just can’t get you where you want to be. Not “The Perfect Career.”

Do You Have White-Collar Career?

Here is the Wikipedia definition of white-collar. “The term white-collar worker refers to a person who performs professional, managerial, or administrative work, in contrast with a blue-collar worker, whose job requires manual labor.

Typically white-collar work is performed in an office or cubicle.” My definition is a person who is employed by someone else to do work other than manual labor or sales. Many people choose a white-collar career, as it is one of the most socially acceptable of the options available. It has long been viewed as the safe and secure option.

Recently that has changed. The implied contract that, if you are loyal to the company, the company will be loyal to you, is long gone. I’ve also been a white-collar worker in my career. In my experience, there are two types of people who do this type of work: Achievers and Hiders.

Achievers are the people who want to perform at a high level. They are ambitious, motivated and energetic. They are full of ideas and want to move up the corporate ladder, which are great attributes to have. But there is a downside for the Achiever.

The moment a person decides to be an Achiever, they become a target. Their boss sees them as threatening to their job, so they start to hold them down or take shots at their reputation. Their peers see them as a person who will either embarrass them or keep them from getting a promotion, so they start to do what they can to undermine their accomplishments.

So, to remain an Achiever and survive in this hostile environment, a person must become good at one thing that has nothing to do with their productivity—and that’s politics. They must learn how to navigate the political world by diminishing their enemies and strengthening their relationship with powerful people.

In fact, some of the most successful people in the corporate world aren’t Achievers at all. They are pure politicians. So if you decide to work in the corporate environment and to be an Achiever, you must accept the fact that you must become a good politician also.

Now, let’s talk about the Hiders. These are the people who HATE politics, but still need a job. They learn not to be the ambitious Achiever. They don’t stand out. They don’t speak up in meetings. They don’t bring new ideas. They HIDE. They keep their heads down and do as they’re told.

They do just enough so that they aren’t talked about negatively. They survive. And this has worked for decades. But in the New Economy, it’s becoming much more difficult to hide. And people are running out of time.

So, back to our Perfect Career List: Can a white-collar job deliver on the list? Again, the clear answer is no—certainly not in very many areas.

Do You Have Sales Career?

Some people choose to get away from being an “employee” and get involved in a sales career. This is certainly more adventurous because typically salespeople are paid on their production instead of by the hour.

I’ve known thousands of salespeople. There is a common theme I’ve noticed over the course of my career. The typical salesperson will have a period of time where everything goes perfectly. Everything they touch turns to gold and they make some really good money. As soon as that happens, they almost always set their lifestyle to that level of income.

They buy a new house, get new cars, put their kids in better schools, purchase a vacation home—the works. Everything is great for a while. And then something changes. The company changes the compensation plan, their territory gets reduced, a competitor shows up, they lose their best customer, the economy goes into recession, new technology makes their offer less valuable, or government regulations change their industry. These are just a few examples.

There are hundreds more reasons why the salesperson’s world could (and probably will) get more complicated. When that happens, with the big lifestyle they’ve developed, now 40 hours a week isn’t enough to pay the bills. So they go to 50 hours a week. And then 60. And then 70. And then their life gets very small. Yes, they have the stuff, but they don’t have time to enjoy it.

The other challenge for the sales career is, no matter how a person does, they still start at zero the next day. It can be tiring to live under that kind of pressure over a long period of time. Can a sales career pay the bills? Sure. But can it deliver on The Perfect Career we described earlier? Again, the answer is no.

Do You Have Traditional Business Ownership?

Some people opt for the big dream—building their own business where they are the boss and they call the shots. It’s an exciting idea, isn’t it? Here’s the reality for most people:

Step one: They use their life savings, take on new debt, and many times borrow money from friends and family to get started.

Step two: They take on more debt in the form of leases and personal guarantees in just about every direction.

Step three: Now instead of focusing on what they are good at (let’s say they were great at sales and decided to start their own business), they have to be all things to all people. They act as attorney for legal matters, accountant for financial matters, babysitter for employee matters, negotiator for purchasing matters, and collection agency for accounts receivable matters. They even get to take out the garbage. They are doing EVERYTHING but selling, which is what they were good at in the first place.

Step four: They struggle. Instead of owning the business, the business owns them. They are the first person to work and the last person to leave. And after everyone else gets paid, they might be able to take home enough money to pay their own bills, let alone reduce the debt they incurred to start the business in the first place.

Step five: They succeed or they fail. They either hit a point down the road where the business is successful, or they fail, many times filing for bankruptcy and falling back into a corporate or sales job. And even if they are successful, that usually means a lifetime of long hours and stress.

Sounds romantic doesn’t it? If you haven’t started your own business before, ask friends who have if this description isn’t accurate. Most people who start their own traditional business aren’t worried about getting a return on their investment. They just want a return OF their investment. It’s pretty clear that traditional business ownership can’t provide the Perfect Career as we’ve described it.

Do You Have An Investor Career?

The last category of ways to earn a living in the world today is to be an investor. And what do you need to become an investor? Money, right? If you don’t have a lot of money, it’s going to be very difficult to earn a living from the return on your investments, especially if you try to be conservative to reduce the risk of loss.

But let’s say you do. What’s the next thing you need in order to be a successful investor? You need to have incredible knowledge and skill. I know more people than I could count who were skillful real estate investors over the years. But when things radically changed in the real estate market, their skill couldn’t help them. They lost big.

Would you like to invest in someone’s traditional small business? Good luck. In most cases, you won’t be an investor; you are more likely to be a philanthropist. How about the stock market? People do great there, don’t they? A few do, at least from time to time. But I know more people who’ve lost than have won, especially in the past decade.

It’s very difficult to have guaranteed returns when you’re not in control. And trust me, as an investor you are NOT in control. Anything can happen. And it can happen overnight.

Let me tell you a story to illustrate that point. In late 2001, I was living large. I had sold a company I co-founded and was working as a very highly paid consultant. For my part of the sale I received approximately 170,000 shares of stock in the new company. It was publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange and selling for about $44 a share, which meant the value of my stock was around $7.5 million.

I had big income and a great portfolio. Life was GOOD. I used part of the stock to secure a home construction loan of about $2 million for a dream house I was building. As for the rest, I didn’t diversify because I knew the company was in great shape with a good product and an amazing sales force.

Then something out of my control happened. Overnight the stock went to $37 a share because a group of investors had targeted the company and shorted the stock. In other words, the lower the stock price went, the more money they would make. I thought it was ridiculous because the company was doing great, so I bought some more shares at $37, using my existing shares as collateral, knowing the price would go back up. It went to $33. I bought more shares. It went to $27.

I started getting margin calls, which meant if I didn’t send them money, they were going to start selling my shares to cover the losses. I didn’t have it to send. The stock continued to go down. It went all the way to $10 a share and my $7.5 million was gone.

Poof! All in less than 90 days. Now, the stock eventually came back and the company was taken private for $65 a share. But I wasn’t there to capitalize on it. I was wiped out. Could I have been smarter? Sure. Did I make mistakes? Absolutely. But here’s the lesson: If you’re going to be an investor, you have to accept that things will be taken out of your control from time to time. And when that happens, it can be very expensive. Can being an investor deliver on that list? I don’t think so.

So, back to our Perfect Career List.

We’ve talked about blue-collar work, white-collar work, sales, traditional business ownership, and investing. And none of them can deliver on our Perfect Career List.

So is the perfect career even possible? The answer is yes, but to get there you need to understand that everything is changing. The old models of compensation are dead or dying, and we are going through the biggest economic shift in any of our lifetimes.

  5. Fifth. Write out a clear, concise statement of the amount of money you intend to acquire, name the time limit for its acquisition, state what you intend to give in return for the money, and describe clearly the plan through which you intend to accumulate it.
  6. Sixth. Read your written statement aloud, twice daily, once just before retiring at night, and once after arising in the morning.

AS YOU READ-SEE AND FEEL AND BELIEVE YOURSELF ALREADY IN POSSESSION OF THE MONEY. It is important that you follow the instructions described in these six steps. It is especially important that you observe, and follow the instructions in the sixth paragraph. You may complain that it is impossible for you to “see yourself in possession of money” before you actually have it.

Here is where a BURNING DESIRE will come to your aid. If you truly DESIRE money so keenly that your desire is an obsession, you will have no difficulty in convincing yourself that you will acquire it.

The object is to want money, and to become so determined to have it that you CONVINCE yourself you will have it.

To the uninitiated, who has not been schooled in the working principles of the human mind, these instructions may appear impractical. It may be helpful, to all who fail to recognize the soundness of the six steps, to know that the information they convey, was received from Andrew Carnegie, who began as an ordinary laborer in the steel mills, but managed, despite his humble beginning, to make these principles yield him a fortune of considerably more than one hundred million dollars.

Here’s what that means: In the future, you’re only going to be paid for performance. You won’t be paid for your time anymore. Servers in the food industry already live in this model. They get a very low hourly wage required by law and they make their living through tips, based on their performance.

If you can imagine the same model being applied to virtually every job in the world, you will see what is coming. The person cleaning the rooms in a hotel won’t be paid by the hour anymore. They’ll be paid per room.

For office workers, here’s an example. A person has a $60,000 annual salary.

Step one: The company will lower that salary to something like $50,000 because with today’s marketplace there are other people to take the job for a lower amount.

Step two: They will reduce their “base” salary to something like $20,000 a year.

Step three: They will tell that person that they can get an additional $30,000 over the year if they hit certain performance benchmarks on a monthly basis. In other words, if they hit their numbers, they can make an additional $2,500 a month. Now the pressure is on, and the company is loving it. If you don’t hit your numbers they can save even more money.

If you DO hit your numbers, guess what’s in your future?

They are going to raise your requirements. Unless you are extremely specialized, this will happen to you if it hasn’t already. Count on it. And it will happen in every single profession worldwide. The evolution has begun. Why is this happening? One, it’s a better model for the company. They’ll get better results with less expense.

Two, the New Economy needs fewer people, so the company has more people competing for fewer and fewer jobs. Let me explain why the New Economy needs fewer people.

The exponential rise of technology has changed everything. Over 100 years ago, 90% of the population worked in agriculture. Today, because of dramatic efficiencies, it’s less than 1%, and the farming jobs are gone.

Remember customer service call centers where you talked to people? Today, you talk to a machine and those jobs are gone.

Remember when companies had a massive amount of salespeople? Now people order online and those sales jobs are gone.

Remember Blockbuster video and all of its employees? Now people watch movies on their handheld or tablet devices, and those jobs are gone. I love books, but go to your local bookstore while you can. They will be history soon, and so will the jobs provided by those stores. I could go on and on through virtually every work category in the world.

Ask yourself every day what you are doing to work towards your goal. Having an objective in mind will motivate you to work towards something.

For example, you could aim to generate $2000 a month, make 30 sales, or quit your job to pursue network marketing full time.

4. Learn from established pros. Start by contacting the person who recruited you. They were convincing enough to get you on board, so take a few tips from their playbook. Ask them what was useful when they were getting started. Get into contact with top sellers and recruiters, if you can. Often, if you have a polite approach and an open mind, they will be more than willing to share advice.

Conferences and networking events can be useful for making contact with successful network marketers.

Look for resources like books, magazines, podcasts, and videos on how to be successful in network marketing.

Be sure to return the favor once you are successful and share your tips with people getting started!

5. Know your target market. Who would most benefit from buying your product? Knowing who you are selling to, what their needs are, and how to reach them is a key to success in network marketing. If you can, avoid relying on friends or family to make the majority of your sales. It can put a strain on your relationship if you ask your loved ones to buy your product and they don’t.

For example, you may sell clothes that are comfortable and practical for stay-at-home moms, or maybe you sell skincare products for young professionals. Think of different ways you can reach out to those groups, like motherhood groups on social media or networking events in your city.

6. Keep at it for at least a year. It can take time to see your hard work pay off. Many people get discouraged and give up when they don’t reach their goals right away. However, it takes time to build a successful business. Persistence can pay off!

If you have a day job, hold off on quitting until you have a reliable stream of income from sales and recruiting.

1. Work every day. Treat your new business like a real job and set working hours for yourself. Depending on where you are in your business, everyone will have a different daily to-do list. In general, reach out to new prospective customers and existing customers, post on social media, and build your contact list every day.

Getting started in network marketing is the hardest part. Keep your goals in mind while you work.

2. Provide excellent customer service. Have information about your product and program on hand and be able to answer questions. Be able to tell prospective customers what is different about your product and what makes it worth the investment. Always tell your customers how much you appreciate their business.

Keep existing customers in the loop by providing information about new products at least once a month.

3. Stay consistent with your business activities. Return all calls and emails within 24 hours. Create a calendar for posting consistently on social media. Set a time every week to review your business plan, look at what is working and what isn’t, and evaluate what needs to change.

Consistency and professionalism are 2 keys to being successful in business.

4. Advertise your new business broadly. You don’t need to spend a lot of money to advertise effectively. Use word-of-mouth and depend on your customers to tell their friends and family about your product. Have a website and active social media pages for your business. You can promote your business and direct new customers to your website through Facebook groups and MLM forums. Always have business cards on hand to give out or leave around town.

You can leave business cards or a small promotional poster in local coffee shops, libraries, and apartment lobbies. Be sure to ask for permission before posting anything.

If you have the budget, try promoting your business through paid social media ads.

5. Harness the power of social media to attract new customers. Social media can be a powerful tool for selling and recruiting. Join local, national, and global groups to network with people around the world and find potential customers and recruits. Use your own pages to advertise your business.

Create a mailing list for interested customers. You can use a mailing list to keep your customers up to date on new products and promotions.

6. Have fun with your business. Many network marketing companies rely on parties to make sales and recruit new distributors. Come up with fun themes and throw parties that you would want to attend. Offer prizes, play games, and make food and drinks.

Having fun with your business is an easy way to stay enthusiastic about what you are doing.

7. Invest some of your profits back into your business. If you start bringing in enough money to make ends meet and then some, look at what parts of your business could be improved. For example, you might be able to invest in some new products, increase your advertising budget, or attend an event.

Always make sure your needs are met first before you spend more money on your business.

8. Recruit new members to your group by offering incentives. You can attract new recruits and motivate existing distributors in your group by offering prizes like money, recognition, products, and even travel. Be clear about what achievements your members need to reach to be eligible for these prizes.

Only offer what you can afford to give. There don’t have to be big prizes when you’re first getting started. For example, you can offer $20 worth of product to your top seller.

Method 3. Avoiding Scams to Become a Million Dollar Income Earner

1. Look for programs with a low start-up cost. While pyramid schemes often require a hefty buy-in, sometimes several hundred or thousand dollars, a legitimate multi-level marketing program will have a small start-up cost. You should be expected to pay for your first round of products and maybe a small fee for training costs or joining the program.

One way to recognize a pyramid scheme is if the company pressures you to pay a fee to move up the ladder.

If you have to take out a loan or go into debt to join a program, think long and hard before jumping in.

2. Ask if the company will buy back unsold inventory. Legitimate companies are required to buy back inventory at 80-90% of the cost you paid for it. Ask if there are any conditions for buying back unused inventory, and be sure to read the small print.

If the company doesn’t buy back, ask yourself what you will do with your inventory if you can’t sell it.

3. Look at who is making the most money in the company. Can people make enough money to live on through sales? Or does the bulk of the money come from recruiting other distributors and making commission through them? If new recruits struggle to make sales and get commissions while top recruiters are making thousands of dollars a month, the program could be a pyramid scheme.

Ask how many new recruits are successful and how many drop out. Do they get their money back?

According to the FDA, 70% of your income should come from direct sales rather than recruiting.

4. Be realistic about your potential market. If you are jumping on the bandwagon with a popular MLM company, especially in a small community, the market may already be oversaturated. Are there people in your social circle who would be interested in buying your product? Will they be able to afford it? Did someone else from your program already reach them?

If you have a large network and can rely on your friends and family to spread the word about your new business, you might be a good candidate for network marketing.

Step 6: Use Follow-Up & Follow Through to Become a Million Dollar Income Earner

This may offend some people, but I’m willing to take that risk.  The methodologies being taught by gurus are not only ineffective, they are manipulative, unethical and untruthful. 

Nobody that has ethics wants to contact people, pretend to be their friend or that you have similar interests when what you really are doing is hoping to pitch your stuff.  I didn’t like it, I’m sure you don’t like it and we know prospects don’t like it.  Once you discover how all decisions are made in the subconscious mind, being transparent and proud will make you a fortune. 

More than 90% will say “yes” to looking with an open mind in less than 30 seconds.  That means you don’t need very many people to talk to.  The only people who believe they need a lot of leads are the people selling them, and the people who don’t know what to say to get a yes while being honest and transparent.  Rejection-free rocks!

Why Follow-Ups Are Important

Following up with a prospect can be hard. You have to muster the courage to reach out again. You have to face the possibility of rejection. And you have to extend an offer without sounding too desperate.

With so many things that could go wrong, it’s easy to skip following up. But that’s a big mistake if you’re building a network marketing business. If you’re inviting people to join your network, it’s critical to follow up, and this article will explain why in more detail.

Afterwards, your perspective on following up will change. Because following up isn’t something to dread—it’s an exciting opportunity filled with potential.

[1]: A Follow-Up Builds Trust

If you can close a prospect in the first meeting, more power to you! But you will find that some prospects are hesitant. They need to talk with a family member first or say, “I need to think about it.” That’s because people tend to give you a business in proportion to how much they trust you.

A follow-up builds more of that trust between you and the prospect, which puts them at ease. It gives you another opportunity to answer their questions and explain how joining will change their lives.

A follow-up gives you more face time with the person, which deepens the relationship. The more they trust you, the more likely they will sign up. Following up will build more of that precious, needed trust. Without trust, network marketing is a lot harder.

[2]: A Follow-Up Teaches You about the Prospect

Do you have these thoughts throughout the day: “I wonder whatever happened to that one prospect? Do they actually want to join? Or are they just not interested?”

Instead of worrying and guessing, follow up with the prospect. A follow-up gives you intel on the situation. In turn, you can use that information to make decisions.

If you see the prospect is interested but hesitant, then you should start working that lead. But if you realize the person isn’t interested, let them go and move on to other leads. You can’t decide what to do until you follow up and learn more.

A follow-up ties up loose ends so you can focus on moving forward.

[3]: A Follow-Up Is a Promising Lead

Let’s say you wake up one day with two options:

Option 1: Follow up with the guy who said he was interested yesterday.

Option 2: Start approaching new people.

Which one is more promising? The follow-up, any day of the week.

Your time is precious and you need to focus on the people who are most likely to give you business. With a follow-up, the prospect already knows your name, your offer, and has voiced interest in joining.

That’s a much better lead than talking to new people. The potential to close a deal is a lot higher. You can grow your network marketing business quickly by working efficiently. That’s why you choose to follow up—it’s strategic and makes the most of your time.

[4]: A Follow-Up Prevents Sidetracking

People are busy. They have jobs, families, and other responsibilities. On top of that, all kinds of businesses are fighting for their attention. Sometimes people get sidetracked and forget about your offer.

When you think about it, the same thing happens to you. Have you ever forgotten about someone’s offer and never responded to their message? You don’t think about it again until they reach out to you.

A follow-up brings your prospect back to considering joining your network. It’s a way of putting the offer back into the spotlight so they’re thinking about it again.

If you want your prospect to be focused on your offer, you need their attention. Follow up with them, whether it’s a phone call or an in-person meeting, and remind them of your valuable offer.

[5]: Do You Follow Up with Your Prospects?

Anyone who shows interest in connecting with you deserves more attention. So make following up part of your network marketing strategy. If you don’t practice following up, you could miss out on key opportunities to expand your network.

But here’s the good news —if you start following up, and do it well, you will start seeing more growth. Your network will grow faster, your business relationships will deepen, and your revenue will increase.

And over time, following up will become second nature to you.

If you’re like most people, and that was the case with me, parts 5 and 6 of The Simple 6 will awaken your common sense and make you a lot of money.   I thought, while I was failing, that the money I wanted to earn was in sponsoring.  It isn’t. 

Spoiler alert!  We get paid on volume, not the number of distributors we have.  You can’t do the minimum and make the maximum.  What does that mean?  Would you rather have your teammates doing the minimum autoship monthly or $1,000 each month?  No brainer. 

You’ll learn a skill we used to help each rep get 4-8 customers a month, 50+ for the year.  That’s volume, everybody makes more money.  

 Follow-up and follow-through is where the huge money is in network marketing.  In 1995 we discovered that duplication cannot be taught, it must be caught.   Not only did this discovery lead to greater growth, it reduced our time commitment weekly to under 12 hours.  The 3-Deep Pattern creates more money in less time and fosters astonishing partnerships and relationships.

Step 7: Duplication

Duplication is an elusive beast in Network Marketing. It’s like unicorn dancing through the woods. You’ve heard about it, but you’ve never seen. Most people really struggle with duplication. I know I did. When I first got involved in Network Marketing, I’d bring in a group of people, and they’d bring in people.

But once my organization got up to around 20 or 30 people, it’d crash back down on itself. During my first 3 years in Network Marketing, I rebuilt my team 7 times! I didn’t have duplication. I had addition and subtraction. I’d bring somebody in, and I’d lose somebody.

I’d bring in a group of people with all of this potential, and they’d just lay there, not doing anything. I didn’t have residual, and I didn’t have this business that worked while I slept. I did all the work. It was like duplication didn’t even exist. I was so frustrated, and towards the end of those 3 years, I began to think that maybe Network Marketing wasn’t for me. Maybe I just wasn’t a good enough leader. Maybe I didn’t have enough vision.

Network Marketing just didn’t seem to be working out for me. People were blaming me when they left. I was blaming myself. And I had this revolving door of people with no residual income at all. Network Marketing was just a job. Not only was I frustrated because duplication wasn’t working for me, but I watched these people that didn’t know nearly as much as I did at the Network Marketing business and they had tons of duplication!

It seemed like they didn’t know anything, but had groups of thousands and thousands of people. And yet I had more knowledge from my 3 years in Network Marketing and zero duplication! But once I finally decided to change my mindset and consider myself to be a professional, I went to work and started learning.

I talked with the strongest leaders that I knew in the Network Marketing profession. I asked them how they were creating duplication. What were they doing? And finally, I found the answer. When I tested it, I went from rebuilding my team to my team really taking off.

Since then, I was able to grow an organization in 60 different countries around the world with over half a million people in my downline over the course of my career. In that process, I discovered clues and secrets to create duplication AND retention in my business.

You can duplicate like crazy, but if you don’t have retention it’s like having a bucket with a big hole in it. You can poor as much water in there as you want; but if it’s flowing out as fast as it’s coming in, you don’t have growth, you just have activity. But by making that hole as small as possible and making sure you’re pouring in more than what is flowing out, you can create duplication and retention.

That is what creates leverage in this business. Leverage turns this from a job into a business that grows exponentially versus just addition and subtraction.
