Tips for Success & Considerations

After doing several 90 Day Challenges during my own career, here are a few tips for success.

# 1: Plan & Promote Your Challenge

Don’t just wake up one day and say I’m going to do a 90-Day Challenge starting tomorrow. Instead, set a date at least one month out. That way you have time to mentally prepare for it, to determine your goals and strategy, and most importantly, so you have time to promote it to your team members.

# 2: Start with a Smaller Timeframe First

I’ve found that most people can’t stick with a 90-Day Challenge. Most people normally fizzle out and quit by day 10 or Day 14. What I suggest you do is start with a 3 Day Challenge first. Then do a 7-Day Challenge. Then do a 14-Day Challenge. Keep working your way up until you know you have the self-discipline to finish what you start.

# 3: Set Written Goals

You must have written goals for your 90-Day MLM Challenge. What exactly do you want to accomplish? You want to focus on things you can control, so your goals should be based around:

  1. How many hours per day will you work?
  2. How many people will you approach?
  3. How many presentations will you give?

Keep in mind that everything else is out of your control. For example, you can’t control who joins or who buys products from you.

# 4: Have a Daily Action Plan & Work Schedule

It’s vital that you have a daily work schedule. You must know at what times you will work your business each day, what days of the week you will work, and you must know what tasks you will focus on each day. I suggest you plan out your week every Sunday night. Take out a day planner and create your work schedule.

# 5: Finish What You Start

No matter how good, or bad, your results are, you must finish what you start. Good things take time. Have patience and stay steadfast. Things will not go exactly as planned. From personal experience, I’ve found it takes about 30-days to really get things going and if you stay at it, by day 60 momentum will kick in.

# 6: Team Up with a Friend

These challenges work best when you do them with a friend. Team up with your upline, downline, crossline, or anyone else who will do a challenge with you. This will be your accountability partner. The more people you can get to participate the better.

# 7: Celebrate Your Success

It’s vital that you celebrate your success. At the end of your challenge, regardless of your results, take your spouse out to dinner or do something fun with your accountability partner.

Amway 9 CORE Steps: My Takeaways

Today, I’m going to share the Amway 9 CORE steps. These are the “steps to success” in Amway, as taught by many successful Amway Diamonds. What you will see in the paragraphs below are the same steps I was taught to follow.

One of the first lessons my upline Platinum taught me was the Amway 9 CORE Steps. The steps were typed up in a little booklet (like a pocket calendar) that I was given when I first joined the business. I was told that if I followed these steps, I would be achieve success in the Amway business.

9 DAILY CORE Steps

In a nutshell, the nine daily steps are:

  1. Read 30-Minutes Daily
  2. Listen to One Tape per Day
  3. Attend All Functions
  4. Show the Plan
  5. Use the Products
  6. Make Retail Sales
  7. Be Teachable
  8. Be Accountable
  9. Counsel with Upline

In the paragraphs below, I will elaborate more about each step and share my own insights on it.

Step # 1: Read for 30-Minutes a Day

If there is one thing I am eternally grateful for from my experience, it’s that it got me reading books on a daily basis. For some 20-years now, I have devoured self-help, business, leadership, and network marketing books. Doing so has had a tremendous positive impact on my life.

I love books. Reading books is one of the fastest ways to learn a new skill. You can read an auto-biography and study a successful person’s life in just 8-10 hours. What took them a lifetime to learn, you can learn in just a few hours. How awesome is that?

Reading “good” books has changed me as a person. It has helped me grow and develop my potential. Reading has improved my mindset, attitude, and outlook on life. I know it will have the same impact on you if you decide to read every day.

As an IBO, I was told to read for minimum 30-minutes per day. Our leaders even had a suggested reading list. The purpose of reading their suggested books was to improve my attitude, mindset, and skill-set.

My Takeaway: You feed your body every day, so why not feed your brain every day? Read non-fiction books to learn new skills that will benefit you in life and in business. If you are too busy to read, or don’t enjoy reading, listen to audio books as you drive to and from work each day.

Step # 2: Listen to a Tape a Day

We were encouraged to listen to at least one tape a day. These tapes were training and motivational tapes. In most cases, the tapes were successful Emerald and Diamond level distributors giving motivational talks. They shared their successes and failures in the business and told you their story.

I loved listening to the tapes. I learned a lot of new skills from doing it, and it kept me inspired. I still listen to personal development audio programs.

I recommend you listen to 30 minutes of audio training per day from successful sales trainers such as Zig Ziglar, Brian Tracy, and Tom Hopkins. Study subjects such as marketing, sales, lead generation, success thinking and entrepreneurship.

Turn off your car stereo and turn on automobile university. You can also listen to podcasts on your phone. If you listened to 30-minutes of audio training for a year, about one specific topic, you Would become an expert on that topic. Isn’t that exciting?

My Takeaway: There is so much good educational content on iTunes, YouTube, podcasts, CDs, etc. Listen to at least 30 to 60-minutes of something positive every day. This is easy to do if you incorporate it during your drive time, lunch break, exercise time, etc.

Step # 3: Attend All Functions & Events

The functions were VERY, VERY fun and powerful. There is nothing like walking into an arena or auditorium with 10,000 to 20,000 people who are excited about life!

These events were electrifying. My favorite function was Free Enterprise Day. We were encouraged to attend local, regional, and the big quarterly events.

I still attend events. I attend several conferences each year to meet new people and learn new skills.

Events are very powerful in network marketing. It gives people social proof and create camaraderie. Events are the glue that keeps your business together. Network marketing is an event-driven business.

My Takeaway: Never, ever miss an event for any reason. Promote all events and attend all events. Remember, we build our business from event to event (90-120 Days). Either you need the event or the event needs you. If money is tight, budget for each event, so you can afford to go.

Step # 4: Show the Plan

We were taught to show 10 presentations per month OR sponsor 2 serious business builders per month, whichever happened first. At the end of the day, your network marketing business won’t grow much if you aren’t sharing the business with new people each day.

Knowing what I know now, 10 presentations a month isn’t enough, in my opinion. With the invention of webinars and videos, I believe you should show MINIMUM 30 presentations per month, since you don’t need to meet face to face with people to do a presentation.

In addition, you must realize this business is a numbers game initially. You must expose the products and business opportunity to A LOT of people to find your serious business partners, part-timers, and customers.

My Takeaway: If you do nothing else with these 9 CORE Steps other than show the plan consistently, there is no doubt in my mind you can build a big business. The more exposures you make, the more money you will make!

Step # 5: Use the Products

Be your own best customer. If you own any type of business you should be your own best customer. You need to use your company’s products so you can develop your own product story and build up your conviction and belief in the products.

You don’t want to be a product expert, but you do need to have a basic understanding about what the products can and can’t do. You need to know the BENEFITS of each product.

You should be passionate about your company’s product line. It makes a huge difference when you are talking with other people.

My Takeaway: Be loyal to your own store and never use a competitor’s product. Be your own best customer! If you aren’t convinced enough to use your own products, how can you expect someone else to buy from you?

Step # 6: Make Retail Sales

Every business needs customers. Although there isn’t a huge emphasis on retailing in network marketing, it is a critical component of the business.

As I see it, everyone should have two to ten personal RETAIL customers at all times. This gives you immediate retail profits. Also, it’s hard to teach your team members how to get customers if you don’t know how to get customers yourself.

On a side note, MLM is not about one person retailing a lot of products. It’s about building a network and having every distributor acquire and maintain several retail customers. That is the key to success: a lot of people each doing a little bit.

My Takeaway: Sell a few products every month to legitimate retail customers and then spend the rest of your time team building.

Step # 7: Be Teachable

Before you can become a teacher and leader, you must be the student first.

You start out as the apprentice. Then you master your skills and become a teacher. Ultimately, your job is to teach people, to teach people, to teach people. That is what successful leaders are really good at.

This is a teaching and coaching business, not a business of recruiting and selling.  

Also, humble yourself and follow someone successful. Follow their lead. Don’t act like a know it all or try to reinvent the wheel. It’s much easier and smarter to learn from someone else’s mistakes than try to figure everything out on your own. Keep an open mind and be a sponge. When you are around your successful mentor, do more listening than talking!

My Takeaway: Stay coachable and hungry and never let your success go to your head.

Step # 8: Be Accountable

Do what you say and say what you do. In today’s society, that’s pretty rare. Be a person of integrity and if you say you are going to do something, do it! Be reliable to your team and upline. Find an accountability partner, if possible, and check in with them daily.

Building the business is like going to the gym. Most days you aren’t motivated to go. It’s easy to come up with a reason to skip a day. However, if you have an accountability partner, you are less likely to miss a day at the gym. If you have an accountability partner in your Amway business, there’s a higher likelihood you will put in the work consistently.

My Takeaway: Talk is cheap. Watch the feet not the list. Make sure your actions align with your words. It’s easier to stay “engaged” and “active” in your business if you have someone to be accountable to (other than yourself).

Step # 9: Counsel with Your Upline

We were taught to get 100% of our advice from our active, successful upline and to avoid cross-line communication at all times.

This advice does have some merits, considering your upline has a financial stake in helping you become successful in the business, whereas cross-line reps have no stake in helping you succeed.

That being said, I think we can all learn from each other. I realize your upline mentor has a vested interest in your success, but I don’t believe it’s smart to follow anyone blindly. By all means, seek their counsel and input, but still trust your instincts and get your guidance from a variety of sources.

Just make sure the person you get advice from is SUCCESSFUL in their own right, and has YOUR best interest in mind.

My Takeaway: All successful people I know of have a coach or mentor and they HUMBLE themselves to listen to that person. Stay plugged in with your ACTIVE upline at all times!

Putting it All Together

In summary, these are the 9 CORE Steps. They aren’t rocket science, but I do believe that if you follow them you will make significant progress in your business. I would also caution you do the following things:

  1. Always trust your instincts.
  2. Don’t spend money just to spend money; monitor your business expenses wisely.
  3. Going to functions and events will not build your business in and of itself; only retailing, recruiting, and team building does.
  4. Seek advice from several mentors, just make sure they are qualified and successful and care about your success.
  5. Acquire and maintain at least two to ten retail customers at all times.
  6. Focus 90% or more of your “work hours” on income producing activities: retailing and recruiting.
