But what if that’s not something that everyone wants? The fact is, this goal is not on everyone’s agenda.

Research suggests that developing a tight-knit group of contacts within a single industry, or working on one single path, is actually far less valuable than building a network that spans industries and groups.

The term “corporate ladder” is a conceptualized view of a company’s employment hierarchy in which career advancement is considered to follow higher rungs on a ladder, with entry-level positions on the bottom rungs and executive level, upper management, positions at the top.

You climb the corporate ladder because you want to, not because you “have to”. Thus, it is people who are naturally driven to work hard, network, and prove their worth repeatedly to a company that tend to get promoted.

Is it worth it to work nights and weekends and make sacrifices in your personal life? To them it is.

Benefits of Climbing the Corporate Ladder

For most of the general public of the United States, climbing the corporate ladder is not a top priority in life. To them, there are more important things to take care of first. As long as their quality of life is good, and there is enough money put into a bank account to ensure monthly expenses are taken care of, then why worry?

But what if climbing the corporate ladder meant that both of those things would be improved?

Wouldn’t it be a good idea to spend some time working on those career goals and better one’s finances within the foreseeable future?

By implementing a few behaviors on a daily basis, rising through the workplace ranks doesn’t have to be particularly time consuming (actually, it probably would take less time than you think). The benefits are outstanding, too.

The first thing is that you get to take home more money (and thus more to provide for your family members too), as your annual income will be increased.

Secondly, you will have a little more left over for emergencies, and beyond that there are a myriad of different ways that you stand to gain from other workplace benefits and perks too.

Ways to Climb the Corporate Ladder?

It’s important to remember that success doesn’t happen overnight. The path is long and challenging. Instead of blindly working without a road map, employ some of these strategies to stay focused and speed things up as you climb the corporate ladder.

1. Have a can-do attitude

Those who are willing to do whatever it takes to make it to the top are the ones who will see the quickest results. This means volunteering for projects and taking the approach that no task is ever beneath you.

Be the first one to throw your hat in the ring the next time there’s an opportunity to take the reins of an assignment or project. Your willingness to help out and put in the extra work won’t go unnoticed by upper management.

The same goes for completing tasks that may seem below your pay grade. Just because certain responsibilities aren’t part of your job description doesn’t mean you can’t put in the extra effort to help out.

2. Let your work do the talking for you

The best way to show your managers, senior employees, and vice presidents that you should be next in line for a promotion is by showing it through your work.

Put 100% into every assignment that comes your way. Nothing else matters if you aren’t completing work that stands out from the rest. If you do great work, people will take note.

Whenever you complete a project, ask yourself, “Would I be comfortable putting this work on my resume?” If the answer is no, go back to the drawing board and improve your output.

3. Build a robust professional network

Networking with your peers is one of the easiest ways to get ahead in the business world. Establishing a strong network of connections within your industry will open doors to new opportunities that may not have been on your radar.

Networking doesn’t need to be complicated. It can be as simple as grabbing coffee with someone every few months to keep in touch. At the very least, you can send an email to maintain an open line of communication.

You can take your networking one step further and seek out professional mentors. A mentor can help you a great deal as you progress through your career. They can give you invaluable feedback and guidance as you work your way up the ranks.

Keep in mind that networking is a two-way street. Be willing to catch up with old colleagues and professional acquaintances when they reach out to you. Don’t just wait until you’re in a time of need and start messaging your entire contact list on LinkedIn. This will come off as ungenuine once your motives come to light.

4. Avoid office politics (and politics altogether)

Contributing to toxic workplace politics is a surefire way to stifle your career progression. Avoid feeding into the office gossip and rumor mill — it won’t get you anywhere that’s good.

Partaking in office politics can quickly tarnish your reputation. You don’t want to be known as the person who is talking behind someone’s back or picking sides when disagreements arise.

Even though you’re not always going to get along with everyone in the workplace, you can always be circumspect. Your best bet is to take the high road whenever you come across conflicts with difficult coworkers.

5. Keep your head up

As tempting as it might be, don’t dwell on failures that you experience throughout your career. Things won’t always go as planned along the way — it’s the nature of the game.

The trick is to pick yourself up and get back to work. Reflect on your failures and see them as an opportunity to learn and prevent the same mistakes from happening again.

Once you’re back on track, you can evaluate your setbacks and realize you’re stronger and more resilient for going through those experiences.

6. Expand your skill set

Expanding your skill set throughout your career will set you up for new opportunities. The business world is continually evolving with new in-demand skill sets that crop up regularly.

There’s a wide range of soft skills and hard skills you can pick up to set yourself apart from the rest of the pack. These can include things like sales strategies, problem-solving, and analytical reasoning.

Always be open to learning new skills. For example, take the initiative to learn a new tool that your company is trying to implement. You’ll be a highly valuable and indispensable asset if you become an expert in certain areas.

7. Be data-driven

Nothing will impress your superiors more than taking a data-driven approach to every project and decision you make. It’s one thing to make claims about what you think is happening with business, but it’s another to be able to prove your claims with factual data.

Today, there is a seemingly infinite amount of data that can be gathered to support your work. Take a step back and explore how you can use data to deliver work that shines.

Upper management will likely notice when you bring quantifiable results to the table. The more you can show that you’re thinking about the same business objectives they are, the more likely you are to get a promotion (and a raise).

8. Keep your eye on the prize

It’s essential to have a clear vision of your career progression. You aren’t going to jump directly from the mailroom to the corner office. There will be different milestones you must achieve before you make it to the top.

Understanding your career path and knowing which job title you need to obtain next will make the road to success seem more attainable. Focus on the next promotion or goal at hand.

You might think that working hard and keeping your head down is the best route to climbing the corporate ladder. You’d be wrong.

Climbing the corporate ladder this way means that you’re often restricted to one department, and only one working pool. You’ll miss out on working with other departments, and having a rapport all across the board is better for getting the promotions and the income that you really want.

2. Corporate ladder climbing leads to a sunk-cost fallacy

In previous generations, climbing the corporate ladder was feasible because you had jobs for life. Now, studies show that people usually stay at one job for only about a year, meaning that climbing the corporate ladder is pointless if you’re going to start over from scratch.

Many people sacrifice their time, happiness and energy climbing the corporate ladder thinking it’ll be justified when they finally get to the top rung – only to get a new job and have to start all over again. It doesn’t make sense, does it? Instead you should look for secondary income sources.

3. Corporate ladder climbing creates additional stress and responsibility

Climbing the corporate ladder means that you’ll be responsible not just for your own work, but for the people in your department. This leads to a lot of stress which takes away from the time and energy you could be spending with your family at home, while making money through other pursuits like network marketing, selling art commissions or running a food business – stuff you actually enjoy.

4. It restricts you socially

Climbing the corporate ladder is done at the cost of your social life in the workplace – your relationships with your colleagues will change and warp into an uncomfortable dynamic.

If your social skills are up to par, don’t let them go to waste. Consider secondary careers that take advantage of them and take up less time and energy than climbing the corporate ladder.

1. You found a new job that looks like a better fit

Finding a new business is always exciting, especially if it looks more like your dream than your current position. If this is the case, it’s probably a good career move as well.

Ideally, you want to find a business that’s an upgrade from your current job, be it a title bump, a better paycheck, or a total transition into a new field you’ve been considering. If you’re excited about your next opportunity, then you shouldn’t think twice about quitting your job.

2. Your work environment negatively impacts your mental health

Toxic work environments are detrimental to your mental health, which can bleed into your personal life and affect your relationships with friends and family, your physical health, your work performance and productivity, and even the quality of your work and engagement in the workplace.

A recent study found that 26% of Americans dread coming into work, and nearly one in four doesn’t feel respected or valued in the workplace. If you identify with these statistics or you’ve noticed a steady decline in your ability or motivation to do a good job, it may be time to quit and move on. 

3. The pay is not enough

Money is a prime motivator to work hard. If you’re not being fairly compensated for your time and effort, you should look elsewhere. In a recent study, 35% of Americans said they would consider returning to a previous job if they were just paid more. If salary is the main reason you want to quit, though, you should definitely consider asking for a raise before jumping ship. 

4. Job stress is too much 

Job stress drives many people to leave their jobs. A recent Gallup survey found that 23% of Americans claimed they feel burned out from work very often while 44% claimed they feel burned out sometimes.

So what’s causing the burnout? Unreasonable deadlines, an unmanageable workload, a lack of support from management, and added stress from responding to work-related emails and texts outside of business hours are the main culprits. 

A little stress throughout your career is expected, but if you feel depleted day after day and notice a pattern over time, it’s not a situation you should live with long-term. 

5. You crave a better work-life balance 

Work-life balance is becoming increasingly important. According to a LinkedIn survey, employers that offer flexible working arrangements experience a 135% higher headcount growth. Another survey found that 25% of workers would take a 10% pay cut in exchange for a more flexible work arrangement. 

6. No career development opportunities. 

More than 80% of employees would quit their jobs due to a lack of career progression. Suffice it to say that a dead-end job is no place to be if you’re ambitious.

How can you tap into your true potential as a professional if you aren’t given the opportunities and chances to grow? If this is you, it may be time quit climbing the corporate ladder.

7. The work culture is a bad fit

A bad work culture can quickly make your life miserable. Your workload and job performance expectations are part of what makes up your work culture, but the values embodied by management and executives are really what drives it.

  • Being your own boss. When you start a business and are self-employed, you are your own boss and ultimately control your own destiny.
  • Income. Whether you view starting a business as an economic necessity or a way to make some additional income, you might find it generates a new source of income.
  • Flexible hours. Owning your own business is hard work and often requires long, odd hours. In some cases, having your own business may allow you to have more flexible hours. Many stay-at-home parents, for example, choose to become entrepreneurs.
  • Purchasing an existing business. While it may not be viewed as “starting” a business, purchasing an existing business has proven beneficial for many business owners—but it undoubtedly requires both financial and time investments. For businesses that are already profitable, these new business owners jump past the true startup phase into running a mature business.

The cons of starting a business

Starting your own business can have many benefits, but keep in mind that not all new businesses succeed. As you consider whether to start a business, you should:

  • Assess your strengths and weaknesses. Is self-employment right for you?
  • Determine startup costs. Can you meet these on your own or would need to secure a loan or other type of outside financing?
  • Research the marketplace. Have you evaluated the competition and considered how your particular business will succeed?
  • Outline your business goals. What do you want to accomplish and what will you consider a success?

  1. First. Fix in your mind the exact problem you want eliminated. It is not sufficient merely to say “I want plenty of….. “Be definite as to what you want. (There is a psychological reason for definiteness which will be described in a subsequent chapter).
  2. Second. Determine exactly what you intend to give in return for what you want and what you desire. (There is no such reality as “something for nothing.)
  3. Third. Establish a definite date when you intend to possess what you want and what you desire.
  4. Fourth. Create a definite plan for carrying out your desire, and begin at once, whether you are ready or not, to put this plan into action.
  5. Fifth. Write out a clear, concise statement of what you want or the amount of money you intend to acquire, name the time limit for its acquisition, state what you intend to give in return for the money, and describe clearly the plan through which you intend to accumulate it.
  6. Sixth. Read your written statement aloud, twice daily, once just before retiring at night, and once after arising in the morning.

Problem solving doesn’t always follow a step by step process so be prepared to jump around the points. This process can be very helpful during a company meeting or a site meeting. Take these steps and formula with you and get other’s input.

In a Nutshell: You CAN solve or eliminate the problem. Go through the formula and steps, with others if possible, and make a note of your solutions.
