Overweight and obesity is a serious health problem that affects millions of Americans.
These conditions substantially increase the risk of morbidity from hypertension; dyslipidemia; type 2 diabetes; coronary heart disease; stroke; gallbladder disease; osteoarthritis; sleep apnea and respiratory problems; and endometrial, breast, prostate, and colon cancers. Higher body weights also are associated with increases in all-cause mortality.
Adults
According to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data from 2007–08, the overall prevalence of overweight and obesity for adults was 68 percent (approximately 72 percent among men and 64 percent among women).
Among women, the overall prevalence of obesity was 35.5 percent.
Among men, the overall prevalence of obesity was 32.2 percent.
Children and Teens
Children have become heavier as well. In the past 30 years, the prevalence of childhood obesity has more than doubled among children ages 2-5, has tripled among youth ages 6-11, and has more than tripled among adolescents ages 12-19. However, recent data suggest that the rate of overweight in children did not increase significantly between 1999 and 2008, except in the heaviest boys (BMI for age greater than or equal to the 97th percentile).
This rate, though, remains alarmingly high. Statistics show about 17 percent of American children ages 2 to 19, or 1 in 6, are obese. Further, the latest data continue to suggest that overweight and obesity are having a greater effect on minorities, including blacks and Hispanics.

Why Is a Healthy Weight Important?
Reaching and maintaining a healthy weight is important for overall health and can help you prevent and control many diseases and conditions. If you are overweight or obese, you are at higher risk of developing serious health problems, including heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, gallstones, breathing problems, and certain cancers.
That is why maintaining a healthy weight is so important: It helps you lower your risk for developing these problems, helps you feel good about yourself, and gives you more energy to enjoy life.
What Is Overweight and Obesity?
Overweight is having extra body weight from muscle, bone, fat, and/or water. Obesity is having a high amount of extra body fat. Body mass index (BMI) is a useful measure of overweight and obesity. The information on this Web site will provide you with information about BMI (including limitations of this measure) and how to reach and stay at a healthy weight. Talk to your health care provider if you are concerned about your BMI.
What Factors Contribute to a Healthy Weight?
Many factors can contribute to a person’s weight. These factors include environment, family history and genetics, metabolism (the way your body changes food and oxygen into energy), and behavior or habits.
Energy Balance
Energy balance is important for maintaining a healthy weight. The amount of energy or calories you get from food and drinks (energy IN) is balanced with the energy your body uses for things like breathing, digesting, and being physically active (energy OUT):
- The same amount of energy IN and energy OUT over time = weight stays the same (energy balance)
- More energy IN than OUT over time = weight gain
- More energy OUT than IN over time = weight loss
To maintain a healthy weight, your energy IN and OUT don’t have to balance exactly every day. It’s the balance over time that helps you maintain a healthy weight.
You can reach and maintain a healthy weight if you:
- Follow a healthy diet, and if you are overweight or obese, reduce your daily intake by 500 calories for weight loss
- Are physically active
- Limit the time you spend being physically inactive

Assessing Your Weight and Health Risk
Assessment of weight and health risk involves using three key measures:
- Body mass index (BMI)
- Waist circumference
- Risk factors for diseases and conditions associated with obesity
Body Mass Index (BMI)
BMI is a useful measure of overweight and obesity. It is calculated from your height and weight. BMI is an estimate of body fat and a good gauge of your risk for diseases that can occur with more body fat. The higher your BMI, the higher your risk for certain diseases such as heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, gallstones, breathing problems, and certain cancers.
Although BMI can be used for most men and women, it does have some limits:
- It may overestimate body fat in athletes and others who have a muscular build.
- It may underestimate body fat in older persons and others who have lost muscle.
Use the BMI Calculator or BMI Tables to estimate your body fat. The BMI score means the following:
BMI | |
Underweight | Below 18.5 |
Normal | 18.5–24.9 |
Overweight | 25.0–29.9 |
Obesity | 30.0 and above |
Waist Circumference
Measuring waist circumference helps screen for possible health risks that come with overweight and obesity. If most of your fat is around your waist rather than at your hips, you’re at a higher risk for heart disease and type 2 diabetes. This risk goes up with a waist size that is greater than 35 inches for women or greater than 40 inches for men. To correctly measure your waist, stand and place a tape measure around your middle, just above your hipbones. Measure your waist just after you breathe out.
The table Risks of Obesity-Associated Diseases by BMI and Waist Circumference provides you with an idea of whether your BMI combined with your waist circumference increases your risk for developing obesity-associated diseases or conditions.
Risk Factors for Health Topics Associated with Obesity
Along with being overweight or obese, the following conditions will put you at greater risk for heart disease and other conditions:
Risk Factors
- High blood pressure (hypertension)
- High LDL cholesterol (“bad” cholesterol)
- Low HDL cholesterol (“good” cholesterol)
- High triglycerides
- High blood glucose (sugar)
- Family history of premature heart disease
- Physical inactivity
- Cigarette smoking
For people who are considered obese (BMI greater than or equal to 30) or those who are overweight (BMI of 25 to 29.9) and have two or more risk factors, it is recommended that you lose weight.
Even a small weight loss (between 5 and 10 percent of your current weight) will help lower your risk of developing diseases associated with obesity. People who are overweight, do not have a high waist measurement, and have fewer than two risk factors may need to prevent further weight gain rather than lose weight.
Talk to your doctor to see whether you are at an increased risk and whether you should lose weight. Your doctor will evaluate your BMI, waist measurement, and other risk factors for heart disease.
The good news is even a small weight loss (between 5 and 10 percent of your current weight) will help lower your risk of developing those diseases.
Be Physically Active
Being physically active and eating fewer calories will help you lose weight and keep the weight off over time.
While people vary quite a bit in the amount of physical activity they need for weight control, many can maintain their weight by doing 150 to 300 minutes (2 ½ to 5 hours) a week of moderate-intensity activity such as brisk walking.
People who want to lose a large amount of weight (more than 5 percent of their body weight)—and people who want to keep off the weight that they’ve lost—may need to be physically active for more than 300 minutes of moderate-intensity activity each week.
For more information on these recommendations, check out the 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans.
Key Recommendations for Weight Loss
- Weight loss to lower elevated blood pressure in overweight and obese persons with high blood pressure.
- Weight loss to lower elevated levels of total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, and triglycerides, and to raise low levels of HDL-cholesterol, in overweight and obese persons with dyslipidemia.
- Weight loss to lower elevated blood glucose levels in overweight and obese persons with type 2 diabetes.
- Use the BMI to assess overweight and obesity. Body weight alone can be used to follow weight loss and to determine the effectiveness of therapy.
- Use the BMI to classify overweight and obesity and to estimate relative risk of disease compared to normal weight.
- The waist circumference should be used to assess abdominal fat content.
- The initial goal of weight-loss therapy should be to reduce body weight by about 10 percent from baseline. With success, and if warranted, further weight loss can be attempted.
- Weight loss should be about 1 to 2 pounds per week for a period of 6 months, with the subsequent strategy based on the amount of weight lost.
- Low-calorie diets (LCD) for weight loss in overweight and obese persons. Reducing fat as part of an LCD is a practical way to reduce calories.
- Reducing dietary fat alone without reducing calories is not sufficient for weight loss. However, reducing dietary fat, along with reducing dietary carbohydrates, can help reduce calories.
- A diet that is individually planned to help create a deficit of 500 to 1,000 kcal/day should be an integral part of any program aimed at achieving a weight loss of 1 to 2 pounds per week.
- Physical activity should be part of a comprehensive weight loss therapy and weight control program because it (1) modestly contributes to weight loss in overweight and obese adults, (2) may decrease abdominal fat, (3) increases cardiorespiratory fitness, and (4) may help with maintenance of weight loss.
- Physical activity should be an integral part of weight-loss therapy and weight maintenance. Initially, moderate levels of physical activity for 30 to 45 minutes, 3 to 5 days a week, should be encouraged. All adults should set a long-term goal to accumulate at least 30 minutes or more of moderate-intensity physical activity on most, and preferably all, days of the week.
- The combination of a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity is recommended, because it produces weight loss that also may result in decreases in abdominal fat and increases in cardiorespiratory fitness.
- Behavior therapy is a useful adjunct when incorporated into treatment for weight loss and weight maintenance.
- Weight-loss and weight-maintenance therapy should employ the combination of LCDs, increased physical activity, and behavior therapy.
- After successful weight loss, the likelihood of weight-loss maintenance is enhanced by a program consisting of dietary therapy, physical activity, and behavior therapy, which should be continued indefinitely. Drug therapy also can be used. However, drug safety and efficacy beyond 1 year of total treatment have not been established.
- A weight maintenance program should be a priority after the initial 6 months of weight-loss therapy.
THE BODYKEY™ SMARTLOSS™ PROGRAM
A personalized weight-loss solution designed to work with you every step of the way. The Bodykey by Nutrilite™ program, a customized weight management plan https://www.amway.com/en_US/bodykey
When it comes to choosing a weight management plan, research shows that one size does not fit all. That’s why Amway introduced BodyKey by Nutrilite™, a weight management program that uses a genetic test or a comprehensive assessment based on validated science to help consumers determine an ideal weight management approach.
“Research shows that evaluating physical and life habits or analyzing an individual’s genes may be useful to personalize a weight management strategy,” said Keith Randolph, Ph.D., nutrition technology strategist at the Nutrilite Health Institute.
With scientifically formulated meal replacement shakes, meal plans based on nutrition guidelines endorsed by the Nutrilite Health Institute, and exercise strategies, the BodyKey by Nutrilite™ program is a personalized path toward achieving your weight goals for life.
The program also includes either an Inherent Health™ genetic test or a BodyKey by Nutrilite™ assessment tool to determine which nutrition strategy may prove most beneficial in helping each person reach their goals. The availability of the genetic test or assessment tool in particular countries is determined by the needs of consumers in that market and regulations.
Genetic Test
The BodyKey by Nutrilite™ program uses the Inherent Health™ genetic test, developed by Interleukin Genetics, Inc. It requires a simple cheek swab that is shipped to a lab for scientific analysis. The results help determine which nutrient strategy a person should follow:
Carb Sensitive™:
This plan emphasizes healthy protein and fat from lean animal sources and plants. It also suggests moderate consumptions of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Carbohydrates should make up less than 40 percent of daily calories consumed by an individual on this plan.
Fat Trimmer™:
Low-fat foods are emphasized, such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Full-fat dairy and high-fat meats are minimized. This plan offers a larger volume of food where less than 30 percent of the calories come from fat.
Better Balancer™:
This plan offers a balanced diet that includes a wide variety of foods and a moderate amount of healthy fat from sources such as avocados, nuts, seeds, fish, and vegetable oils. Saturated fat intake is limited.
The genetic test also indicates what level of physical activity an individual should consider for optimum results – high intensity or low intensity.
Assessment Tool
The BodyKey by Nutrilite™ assessment tool is a comprehensive, U.S. patent-pending assessment covering six characteristics that are backed by extensive scientific evidence regarding their ability to influence a person’s weight: diet type, eating habits, sleep habits, stress, exercise, and mindset.
The result is a comprehensive, 30-page document with personal lifestyle recommendations and results, including details about six areas of a person’s lifestyle and habits, and which nutrient strategy may yield the most beneficial results. Areas of focus include:
Carb Reducer™:
This plan emphasizes healthy protein and fat from lean animal sources and plants. It also suggests moderate consumptions of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Carbohydrates should make up less than 40 percent of daily calories consumed by an individual on this plan.
Fat Trimmer™:
Low-fat foods are emphasized, such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, whereas full-fat dairy and high-fat meats are minimized. This plan offers a larger volume of food where less than 30 percent of the calories come from fat.
By using science and research to determine a personalized solution for each person, the BodyKey by Nutrilite™ brand offers a customized, lifelong approach to achieving your weight goals – a natural way to empower the optimal you.

BodyKey – 16 Things You Need to Know
What is BodyKey?
BodyKey is a simple, easy to follow, and an extensive weight management program that complies with your lifestyle.
It includes shakes, BodyKey bars, and snacks that may consist of proteins, dietary fiber, carbohydrates, essential vitamins, and minerals.
The BodyKey program, when followed along with exercise, is said to be a way of achieving your goals in life and health successfully. It’s designed in a way that is tailored to each person’s needs.
Their products are also said to contain no added preservatives, sweeteners, colors, or artificial flavors, and this is what a brief look at the studies say:
- Journal of Nutrition and Metabolism: Dietary fiber can improve general health while decreasing weight.
- Nutricion Hospitalaria: The beneficial effects on meal replacement foods are inconclusive.
- Journal of Obesity: One study reviewing meal replacements found that after 12 weeks of consumption, individuals experienced improved body composition.
How Did BodyKey Start?
We can’t confirm when the program and its products were introduced. Still, BodyKey is produced and sold by Nutrilite, whose parent company is “Amway,” an American producer of health, beauty, nutrition, and various other products. You can purchase this individually or as a kit.
According to Amway’s website, Nutrilite began in 1934, when its founder, Carl F. Rehnborg, started marketing what the company says was the first multivitamin supplement sold in North America.
Amway’s website also features a video detailing the history of Nutrilite development over the past 80 years. With matters as serious as your health, you can’t just trust any product. Most of the time, such supplements and shakes are introduced by a shady business trying to rip people off their money while only scams and don’t always work.
We think if Amway has managed to survive actively in the market for such a long time, we can trust them with more confidence. The only thing holding us down right now is scientific research – because we can’t find any.

BodyKey Claims
The product is a meal replacement designed to aid weight loss through its continued use. Some claims are:
- Tailored to your needs
- Backed by science
- Easy way to lose weight
- Long-term weight loss
BodyKey Ingredients and Nutrition Facts
BodyKey products include a number of ingredients, but most of them contain soy protein isolate, whey protein concentrate, or a combination of the two.
The BodyKey shakes and meal replacement shakes contain anywhere between 14-20 grams of protein and sometimes more.
BodyKey Products
BodyKey offers a number of products, including meal replacement shakes, snacks, and meal bars. Some of them include:
- BodyKey by Nutrilite Meal Replacement Shake Mix
- BodyKey High Protein + Fiber Bar
- BodyKey Zesty Protein Snack
- BodyKey SmartLoss
Soy Protein Isolate
Soy protein isolate is separated from the other components of the soybean. This dry powder ingredient is 90 to 95% protein and virtually carbohydrate and fat-free.
There is insufficient evidence to support this ingredients use for weight loss.
Whey Protein Concentrate
This is one of the most common (and least expensive) form of whey protein.
A study by Nutrition & Metabolism wrote that while, “Subjects in both the control and treatment group lost a significant amount of weight with a 500 calorie reduced diet,” those who took the protein supplement lost more body fat and preserved more lean muscle.
Unfortunately, this wasn’t carried out on this formula. So, while the ingredient may have worked for this product, it isn’t linked to BodyKey whatsoever.
Does BodyKey Work?
We could not find any scientific backing for BodyKey, which is a bummer. Scientific research is imperative, and some might be concerned when a company doesn’t offer the science-based facts to support their claims.
Reviews on the use of the product for weight loss suggests that some have seen success with this product. By replacing around two meals per day, you can start losing excess pounds gradually. However, unsatisfactory reviews regarding the products refer to poor taste and quality.
To us, this means that the product most likely misses the mark. You can find effective weight-loss products out there; the trick is to find one that tastes great – so you stick with it. If a product turns you off, chances are you won’t see any results.
Some users complained about Soy protein. Soy protein isolate is used, which is considered to be a disadvantage.
It’s assumed to be harmful if taken for prolonged periods of time, according to The Journal of Nutrition.
BodyKey Benefits and Results
The official website of BodyKey reports having found that “the effectiveness of this meal replacement shake has been demonstrated through clinical studies, along with exercise and diet for weight reduction.” BodyKey Meal Replacement Shakes are said to be scientific formulations that are equivalent to a well-balanced meal.

These may contain 22 minerals and vitamins which provide you with at least one-third of your everyday nutritional requirements, while at the same time, helps keep your calorie intake low.
While there are some noted benefits of some of the ingredients in this product, we can’t seem to locate anything on the formula.
Flavors
BodyKey is available in three flavors:
- Strawberry
- French Vanilla
- Chocolate

BodyKey offers an app called SmartLoss and a related eating plan.
Apparently, when you use the app, the eating plan, and the BodyKey foods, you can reach your weight-loss goals.

What Users Are Saying
“I have PCOS and was told I could only lose weight with Diet Pills! (3 different medical professionals) This app works!!!! I lost 35 lbs. in 4 months! Follow the plan!”-
“At least for myself. Absolutely love that it tracks salt, caffeine, protein etc. What is somewhat disappointing is that this app seems to only be made for people who are looking be “average” weight I’ll say. As someone who is in MMA and looking to start CrossFit, I have a pretty specific meal plan for muscle gain, but the app looks at my meal plan as excessive eating and there’s no way of correcting it. Please add feature to let app know the user’s fitness/workout lifestyle.”
