Everything You Need to Know about Anti-Aging Skin Care

Anti-aging skin care: it’s something all of use begin to get curious about as the years tick by, but where do we even begin? Today we’re talking about all things anti-aging skin care, including how your skin changes with age, how to help curb these effects, and what our favorite anti-aging skin care products are!

Do you ever have a moment where you discover something new about your body in a passing glance of the mirror? For me, it always happens when I’m attending a party or get-together where I can’t do a thing about it.

Typically, this ‘discovery’ is centered around a misplaced long hair in the chin area, a brand-new gray hair, or my personal favorite…a new wrinkle that had gone unnoticed before. Choosing to age with grace isn’t exactly…graceful at all times, but with some intentional skincare and a little bit of knowledge you can definitely age with confidence.

How do we begin supporting this sophisticated organ through the years? Knowing what can help us in our efforts, what may not be helping (despite what your Aunt Susan told you), and knowing where to spend your time and money to keep skin healthy and glowing will keep a pep in our step at each season of life.

WHAT’S IN OUR SKIN?

The first step to really understanding our anti-aging skin care routine is understanding what exactly makes up our skin. As we start to age our skin goes through changes such as epidermal thinning, slow cell turnover rate, and a breakdown of framework and structure. Learning about this vital organ can greatly help the appearance of our skin and slow down the changes that occur naturally or from outside sources.

The top most layer of our skin is called the Epidermis. This layer is full of various skin cells that carry substances such as:

  • Keratin- a protein that makes cells adhere to each other and forms a protective layer.
  • Lipids- a mixture of ceramides (a waxy material), free fatty acids, and cholesterol that play a crucial role in the skin’s protective barrier to keep and aid the natural repair process.
  • Melanocytes- cells responsible for the formation of melanin, which determines the color of our skin.
  • Desmosome- an anchoring junction that links cells together.

The deeper layer of our skin is called the Dermis. Some things you can find in the Dermis are:

  • Fibroblasts- a type of cell that makes collagen and structural framework in tissue, these are especially critical in wound healing.
  • Collagen- a protein that provides a scaffold for strength and structure in the skin.
  • Lymph Vessels- carry white blood cells
  • Capillaries- carry blood
  • Sweat Glands- small glands that secrete sweat (water)
  • Sebum Glands-small glands that secrete sebum (oil)
  • Hair follicles- a sheath that surrounds the root of hair
  • Nerve Endings- touch receptors
  • Now that you’ve got a breakdown of what’s in your skin let’s get to what happens to our skin when we start to get older. You may start to see skin discoloration, wrinkles, sallow skin tone, and uneven texture as soon as your early twenties. However, there are two different processes that accelerate skin aging: chronological and environmental.
HOW AGING NATURALLY CHANGES SKIN OVER TIME
Stopping the aging process is not the goal. Skin will change naturally over time, and that’s OK! Usually, the first signs of natural aging happen around the time we turn 30. New cells regenerate more slowly and hormone production causes changes to the skin.[1] However, understanding the process of natural aging can help us learn how to work with what we have!
WRINKLE FORMATION

Wrinkles start with the breakdown of collagen creation found in the fibroblasts within the Dermis. As time goes on, collagen production slows down dramatically.[2] In fact, a 68% decrease in collagen formation was measured from 80+year old female skin to 18-29 year old skin[3]. This is due to the decrease in overall fibroblasts over time.

REDUCTION IN HYALURONIC ACID

Another result from the decrease in fibroblasts is reduced creation of Hyaluronic Acid. This substance is an incredible humectant – a type of ingredient that draws moisture from the environment. With less Hyaluronic Acid in our skin structure, it becomes harder for the skin to hold on to water. As a result, the skin becomes more dehydrated and proper barrier function breaks down. A dysfunctioning barrier, more commonly known as a moisture barrier, can cause unusual product sensitivity, dry patches, premature fine lines, slow cell turnover, uneven skin texture, and possibly bacterial breakouts.

UNEVEN PIGMENTATION

Uneven pigmentation is another sign of aging skin. The total number of active melanocytes in our skin decrease at a rate of 8%-20% per decade[4] . This can play a factor in overall skin tone appearance, as melanocytes are responsible for skin color. Every 26 days we have a totally new Epidermis, so skin cells should be leaving the skin at an even rate, but this process becomes slower as we age. In a perfect world we would have the same cell turnover we did as children the rest of our lives!

HOW ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS CONTRIBUTE TO SKIN AGING

Now, this is where things get interesting! While we don’t have much control over the natural aging process, we can absolutely control some of the environmental factors that contribute to aging. From skincare to nutrition and exercise to mental health, all of these things can make or break our experience in skin health as we age.

Sugar is a hot topic in nutrition but have you thought about the effects of sugar in your skin? Pollution in the air around you? What about UV exposure from the sun? When sugar, pollution, or UV light is introduced to collagen it generates an ROS- Reactive Oxygen Species, more commonly known as a Free Radical.[5].

AGE’s are formed when protein or lipids go through the process of glycation. Glycation occurs when insulin doesn’t metabolize sugars properly. AGE’s can cause collagen to become brittle instead of supple and bendable. When Free Radicals and AGE’s are found together it can lead to unorganized, cross linking collagen and inflammation.

THE BEAUTIFUL YOUYOUR ANTIAGING BREAKTHROUGHS

[1]: Antiaging Breakthrough No. 1: Fractional CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing

The antiaging breakthrough of the decade, according to many doctors, is a skin-resurfacing treatment known as CO2 fractional laser therapy. Combining the effectiveness of traditional carbon dioxide lasers — long thought to be the gold standard in wrinkle removal — with a new application technique, it delivers powerful results without the traditionally harsh side effects.

While laser resurfacing doesn’t come cheap — the procedure will cost you about $5,000 — it is quick, accomplished in one or two sessions, with about four days downtime. Goldberg says effects are thought to last eight to 10 years.

[2]: Antiaging Breakthrough No. 2: The New Wrinkle Injections

Wrinkle injection technology soared to new heights last year when the FDA approved four fillers: Perlane, Juvéderm, Artifill, and Radiesse. Along with Restylane, approved in 2003, each uses a slightly different substance to fill wrinkles.

But according to Rhoda Narins, MD, professor of dermatology at NYU Medical Center in New York City, that’s just the beginning. “What’s really significant is that we can now use these fillers to volumize skin anywhere on the face, so you can really sculpt a lifted, youthful look without surgery,” she says.

Currently, most fillers last up to one year, or longer. Only one — Artifill — offers permanent results, but not without concern. According to a published report by the FDA, it increases the risk of granulomas, bumps that form under the skin and may be permanent, as well as an increased risk of allergic reaction.

[3]: Antiaging Breakthrough No. 3: Antioxidants

Topping the list of over-the-counter antiaging ingredients making the most noise these days are antioxidants. These skin-care nutrients fight aging by destroying free radicals, the unstable molecules that occur from sun exposure or pollution and that can literally gobble up the skin’s collagen supply.

“Antioxidants are nutrients that, when topically applied, disarm and neutralize free radicals before they harm skin — so they can play an important role in antiaging skin care,” says Sumayah Jamal, MD, an assistant professor of dermatology and microbiology at NYU Medical Center in New York City.

Scores of studies demonstrate the power of topical antioxidants (particularly CoQ10 and vitamins C and E) to rejuvenate and protect skin.

[4]: Antiaging Breakthrough No. 4: Peptides

Small proteins that stimulate the production of collagen, peptides have been on the cusp of antiaging skin care for a while.  Peptide formulations act like growth factors, stimulating skin cells to make a quicker turnover, much like young skin.

What’s new for peptides? Formulations that seem to yield overall improved results. “They are really getting the science down now, learning how to stabilize the peptides and at the same time inhibit collagenase [the breakdown of collagen] so we have better, more tailored peptide products.

[5]: Antiaging Breakthrough No. 5: Vitamin A

Among the most medically studied topical antiaging treatments are the retinoids — derivatives of vitamin A.

[6]: Antiaging Breakthrough No. 6: Antiaging Sunscreens

Among the most exciting new ways to fight skin aging are two dramatic breakthroughs in sun protection. Most of us know about the dangers of burning UVB rays, but you might be less aware of the damaging and aging effects of UVA. “These are the ones that go deep — UVA rays cause the deep collagen and elastin damage that contributes to aging skin.

They have been available in Europe for some time now, and there is no question they work — and from an antiaging standpoint, they can be your best friend.

Even more exciting: In 2007 these sunscreen advances were combined with antioxidants and other antiaging ingredients in moisturizers and day creams that offer protection against the aging effects of the sun.

[7]: Antiaging Breakthrough No. 7: Nutrients for Healthy Skin

What are the best foods for your skin and the best ways to get the vitamins and other nutrients your skin needs?

SEE: The NUTRITION RECOMMENDER: Nutrition Recommender | Amway United States

You know that you need to nourish your skin to keep it as healthy as possible.

But are you getting enough of the right nutrients from the foods you eat? Could you benefit from taking a supplement or trying an antioxidant-packed lotion?

“The beauty of the skin is that you can affect it from both inside and out,” says dermatologist Doris Day, MD, author of Forget the Facelift: Turn Back the Clock with a Revolutionary Program for Ageless Skin.

[A]: What You Eat Matters

Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidants is good for your whole body, including your skin.

Antioxidants such as beta-carotene and vitamins C, E, and A can curb the damage caused by unstable molecules known as free radicals. These molecules can harm skin cells and cause signs of aging.

One of the best ways to get more antioxidants is to eat a wide variety of fruits and vegetables.

“I recommend going for as much variety and color as possible in your diet,” Day says. “Try snacking on blueberries, strawberries, grapefruit, kale, spinach, and different kinds of peppers.” She also suggests adding a little tomato paste, which contains an antioxidant called lycopene, to stir-fried vegetables, brown rice, or quinoa.

Another good idea is to stock your grocery cart with foods that are high in omega-3 fatty acids, including wild salmon, sardines, fortified eggs, and walnuts.

“Omega-3 fatty acids help keep the top outer layer of the skin strong and intact so that external toxins and pollutants are kept out,” says dermatologist David E. Bank, MD, director of the Center for Dermatology, Cosmetic and Laser Surgery in Mount Kisco, N.Y.

[B]: What About Supplements?

The ideal way to get the nutrients you need for a radiant complexion is eating a healthy, balanced diet. SEE: The NUTRITION RECOMMENDER: Nutrition Recommender | Amway United States

This is a good idea if you spend a lot of time outdoors or are exposed to high levels of air pollution and secondhand smoke.

What are the best foods for your skin and the best ways to get the vitamins and other nutrients your skin needs?

[C]: Pay Attention to Your Skin’s Overall Health

As important as it is to eat a healthy diet, your skin also needs you to not smoke, get enough sleep, exercise regularly, and drink enough water.

No matter what you eat, be sure to  wear sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 every day. The label should say “broad-spectrum,” meaning that it protects against the sun’s UVA and UVB rays.

Apply a nickel-sized dollop of sunscreen to cover your face, says Woolery-Lloyd. If you’re going to be outside, limit your time in the sun, especially between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Always wear protective clothing and a wide-brimmed hat, seek the shade, wear sunscreen, and reapply at least every 2 hours, more if swimming or sweating.

To get results, give it time. “It may take three months to a year to really see an improvement in your skin,” Bank says. “Go with what’s tried and true and give it a solid chance to work.”

[D]: How does nutrition affect your skin?

Together with vitamin E, it protects your skin cells from sun damage. Consuming vitamin C also helps you make collagen , a protein important for your skin’s structure. A diet poor in vitamin C puts you at risk of developing scurvy, a condition that causes skin lesions.

[E]: Some ways to improve skin with good nutrition
  • Daily use of probiotics: There is a connection between the gut and skin that we don’t understand very well yet. What does seem clear is that a healthy gut means better skin! Read up on probiotics and which ones to take. Also, in Europe there is now a group of products using probiotics in skin creams. We’ll see more research on this in the next few years and probably use in the U.S.
  • Healthy oils in our diets matter: Skin has a lot of lipids that help hold cells together. Supplements aren’t as good, it’s turning out, as just eating  things like olive oil, avocado oil, eating real fish, etc, in moderation daily.
  • Get adequate protein: Your skin, nails and hair are made of keratin. If you are severely protein deficient, your hair will actually fall out. What is adequate depends on your size, sex, work out habits, etc.
  • Good doses of antioxidants: In general, the more you eat of these the better. These help prevent damage to cell DNA by scavenging and neutralizing free radicals. Cranberries, blueberries, blackberries, beans, artichokes, and Russet potatoes are all good sources.

[F]: How does nutrition affect the skin?

Essential fatty acids contribute to skin health — omega-6 fatty acids promote healthy skin growth, while omega-3 fatty acids help to prevent dry skin. A poor diet puts you at risk of an omega-3 fatty acid deficiency, and, as a result, you might notice skin and hair problems.

[G]: Does poor nutrition affect your skin?

A poor diet will lead to the apparition of wrinkles earlier and your skin will suffer from premature aging. This is also the case if we are constantly stressed and under a lot of pressure. Moreover, if you do not include fresh fruits and vegetables in your healthy dieting habits, your skin will look dull.

5 Key Skin Nutritional Requirements

[A]: Getting exactly what your skin needs.

Artistry™ scientists unlocked a vital skin secret by discovering that skin looks its healthy best when 5 key Skin Nutritional Requirements are addressed.

These requirements are universal — they apply equally to all skin types, all skin tones, all ethnicities and all ages. What are the Skin’s Five Key Nutritional Requirements? – Artistry™ Education | Amway (brightcove.net)

Plus, each Artistry Skin Nutrition™ Solution is formulated and designed to be personalized for you, and by you. Make your own regimen by pairing products from the different solution to curate the perfect skincare routine, and still fulfill all 5 key skin nutritional requirements.

[B]: Purify to keep skin clean, calm and free of skin-stressing irritants.

Addressed with our Cleansers.

Why is this a requirement?

Surface dirt and impurities can trigger skin irritation, which detract from skin’s visible health and accelerate the appearance of premature aging. Other effects? Enlarged pores, oily shine or flaky dullness.

* How Artistry Skin Nutrition™ helps.

Our cleansers are clinically proven to remove irritating pollution and impurities (including PM 2.5) from skin. Powered by skin-friendly amino acid surfactants, they are also pH-balanced, gentle and mild.

[C]: Rebuild to strengthen and visibly repair skin by revitalizing its support system.

Addressed with our Eye and Face Moisturizers.

Why is this a requirement?

Keeping the support proteins in skin’s extracellular matrix (ECM) strong and flexible is so important. When the ECM proteins are plentiful and springy, you want to keep them that way. As the ECM becomes less dense and less flexible, boosted production and repair are required.

* How Artistry Skin Nutrition™ helps.

The Balancing and Hydrating eye and face moisturizers all include our Prevent Complex to help prevent ECM degradation, protect existing support proteins and help rebuild skin’s own antioxidant defense mechanism. The formulas help keep skin calm so it can focus on its natural production of support proteins and maintaining the ECM.

[D]: Moisturize to saturate skin with lasting hydration and fortify its moisture barrier.

Addressed with our Eye and Face Moisturizers.

Why is this a requirement?

In the modern world of air conditioning and constantly shifting micro-climates, even visibly healthy skin can struggle to maintain moisture. Environmental factors can damage skin’s moisture barrier and exacerbate dehydration.

* How Artistry Skin Nutrition™ helps.

The eye and face moisturizers deliver supercharged moisture levels and hydrate skin for 24 hours. In addition, they include White Chia Seed which has a powerful ability to help replenish and fortify skin’s moisture barrier.

[E]: Protect skin and fight the aging effects of pollution, UV, blue light and infrared (IR).

Addressed with our Eye and Face Moisturizers.

Why is this a requirement?

UV rays are infamous for causing premature skin aging. The latest science shows that other environmental factors like blue light and IR — as well as oxidative damage, especially from pollution — can also age skin’s appearance too fast.

  • How Artistry Skin Nutrition™ helps.

All our eye and face moisturizers include Pomegranate, proven to provide vigorous antioxidant protection as they help soothe and protect skin from pollution. Our SPF face moisturizers also deliver “full light protection”: high-level, broad spectrum protection against UVA and UVB rays with SPF 30 sunscreen, plus blue light and IR defense with Carnosine.

[F]: Visibly Healthy Skin, No Compromises

Each step in the regimen works like a supplement for one or more Skin Nutritional Requirements — now it’s easy to have visibly healthy skin.

  •  Each formula has been rigorously tested in clinical, safety and consumer studies — and was proven to deliver results as promised.
  • The innovations of our own research team, in collaboration with scientists from the University of Michigan, yielded exclusive and clinically proven complexes for visibly healthy skin.
  • These formulas are Artistry™ Clean and are infused with Nutrilite™-grown botanicals.
  • The simple, personalized regimens fit seamlessly into your lifestyle for maximum visible results.
[G]: Prevent Complex +350%

Our Prevent Complex boosts skin’s natural defense system by 350%*. This helps your skin look younger for longer by improving skin’s ability to delay the visible signs of aging. What is the Prevent Complex? – Artistry™ Education | Amway (brightcove.net)

The complex is powered by plants, and it includes Nutrilite™-grown Acerola Cherry, Australian Daisy and Blackberry Extract.

To identify the highest performing blend, we screened and tested over 50 botanicals and these three rose to the top. When we re-tested them as a blend their skincare power was greatly enhanced.
